I recently purchased and have completed most of the dismantling of the 41 COE in my gallery. The grill is the original but is missing the stainless metal strips that were only used in the early 41 COE's. If anyone knows of any availability of these, or of at least some good JPEG photos of them, it would really help me out. I can handle the sheetmetal fab of replacements if need be. Also the frame was shortened by some previous owner, and I am considering replacing it with a later one that I have. It appears that the front crossmember and front frame ends are the major differences from the later ones. The rivets that hold the crossmembers in are certainly removable, but in order to keep the original appearance, I would like to use rivets again. Does anyone know of a source for the correct rivets. Thanks in advance for any help out there.
Robert - Thought I would at least have a photo or parts # but couldn't find one. We have an original '41 Ford Body Parts book, and although it shows the COE cab body and how it's put together, including the parts #'s, it doesn't have anything for the grille. Even looked at our truck and again has everything but the grille. Sorry, hoped I could be of more help.
Thanks for the info about the parts book. I was considering buying that book just for the info that obviously is not there. Might get it anyway, but it helps to know what is really there. I am also thinking that the grill from the 3/4 ton and larger conventionals for 1941 may have enough similarity to be of use. I just have to find someone with such a unit. I know of a NOS grill for the conventional but I am hesitant to lay out the bucks until I have more info about how close the units really are. A friend is willing to assist me to actually fabricate a complete replacement in stainless, and that may turn out to be the answer. Thanks again.
Robert - If you're looking at newer parts books for that year, they may have more info. The book I have is yellowed, delicate and from 1941.
Before you decide to purch any parts for a standard '41, would the measurements from our '41 center grille help? Let me know and I'll dig it out and post length, width, where the hood latch hole is and whatever other specs you want. I recall seeing some of these parts at the Turkey rod run in Daytona, and think the hood latch lever was a bit larger and more heavy duty.
Thanks again! I did get a little bit of info from a local parts guy, and it turns out that there is likely a sharing of the vertical components of the grill sides between the COE and the 41 3/4 ton and larger conventionals. The center piece is different and the COE is unique in that it has no latch assembly included in the center piece. So... the search continues. More later.
