What is the latest word on doing a power steering conversion using a toyota sector on a '58 F-100?
can you use the original pitman arm?
must the frame be strengthened?
does anyone have a pattern for tha adaptor bracket?

Steve, i have the toyota power steering on my 54 f100. No you can't use your stock pitman arm, No Limit sells these setups, go to www.nolimit.net or call toll free 1-888-297-6032 the toyota box to use are from 79-85

I called no limit and he is in the process of tooling up the pitman arm for the 57-60. The rest of the kit is the same as the 53-56.
He's waiting on a customer to send in the 57-60 Ford pieces so that he can ensure that everything is right.
OK, which one of you is he waiting on, holding up the show for everybody else?

He doesn't like to sell just the custom pitman arm, but would do so for around $120.
I went to the wrecking yard and bought the steering box for $130.00 the billet pitman arm for $120.00 and the steering joint for $80.00 from No Limit and a friend of mine where I live made me the bracket for $25.00 that's a total of $305.00. You could go that route it's cheaper.
I got that bracket from Bobs f-100 and I had to install spacers to get it fitting just right. The box came from the local yard. How do you guys use a joint on the box? Are you using the stock steering shaft and just cutting it? I got a 66 Lincoln column from the yard and it fits perfect with just the rag joint. I don't see how you can possibly fit a joint between the two. I had about an inch between the box shaft and the column. Raising it would just put the column in my face.
Another pesky question... I'm hooking up the box to a Ch**y pump. Can I actually get a hose from the yard that will fit it or do I have to spend the gazillion duckets that the local shop wants to fab one? It sure would make my life a whole lot easier.
you-all spoiled my plans.I had a toy gear box located from a '87 but you guy's say it won't work 0n my 53. Does somebody have all the scoop on this project w/o spending big bucks at the restoration store?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Feb-02 AT 08:29 AM (EST)]You can't use an '87 box as I found out the hard way. It must be 79-84 Toyota 4x4 (Maybe early 85 too). Be sure with a junkyard box that you get the return line fitting on the box. I had to make another trip to get that as it is a wierd size. I bought a stock pressure hose for an 84 Toyota and had it spliced into my existing Lincoln hose. I used the stock Lincoln return hose. If you have a good shop, what you need is a 17mm inverted flare at the box end on the pressure side. Since you are using a GM pump, go to the parts store and figure out what end is at the pump (Probably inverted flare), figure out how long it needs to be (I needed 36") and look in the back of the P/S hose book at the illustration page, you might find one to work. I could not find one that had 17mm inverted flare on one end and Ford o-ring or whatever it's called on the other, but I do remember some with inverted flare at each end. You need a custom pitman arm, mine cost $100 from Bobs F100. I used a Cadillac Tilt-and-tele column and cut down a stock connector shaft-yes it is very short and I had to lower the column from the dash about 2" before I got it where I thought the angles were acceptable.

I'm also looking at just splicing/welding the two pitman arms together. Use the top half from the toyota and the bottom ford half. I'll probably need to lengthen and bend the drag link to accomodate a couple inch lift I'd like to do...But that's all part of the fun of making your own toys.
hirschi i'm using a 82 Pontiac Sun Bird tilt column and the distance between the box and column was about 1 1/2 inches, when I called Bob's f100 he wanted $100.00 plus your toyota pitman arm or a $25.00 core charge so I got mine from No Limit, it's a billet and when I showed it to some friends of mine with the toyota steering on there's they wished they had bought there's from No Limit, one friend of mine even took the mesurements and said he was going to make the pitman arm since he's a mill rite, he makes the bracket for $30.00 the sameone Bob's f100 sells for $100.00. The way the steering joint works is, you take a wrench and put it around the shaft at the bottom of the column, which ever size fits around it even if it feels a little lose that's the size. Example= I used an 11 1/6 but that didn't fit around it then I used a 3/4 but that was a little big so 3/4 was the size, then you count the spline, the common spline count is 26,30,36 and 48 then you give No Limit this info. and they will have one made up for you.
Now I know what to do when my rag-joint goes out. Thanks for the info. One last thing that I'm getting to... What did you guys use to cover the hole in the floor around the new column after cutting and fitting up the box? I thought about just using some thick rubber mat to cover the hole, but I think this might give me problems with rust later.
I didn't have to do any cutting on my 54 f100, the 82 pontiac sunbird column went in the stock hole and it had a triangle plate around the column that i bolted to the floor.
I was told by midfifty.com that you can use up to an 86 toyota 4x4 pu box. It all costed me about 225 but I got the hoses, pump, bolts, nuts, resovoir, pitman arm...the whole nine yards... now only need a pitman arm to fit the ford, u-joint, bracket and sleeve to hold all the guts from dropping out..
