I hate the idea to undercoat my truck, but ....?
I am about to put my all new painted / powder coated front sheetmetal back onto my 54 F100 and I am unsure how to protect the bottom of the cab as well as the inside of the fenders. I hate undercoating it. Just bought a can of this super special grease type conservation (a German brand called 'Mike Sander's'), but that's more for inside the doors and those places where metal meets metal (guess for example between fender and inner fender, etc.). It is sticky and will therefore always have a layer of dust / dirt on it (however, that's ok as it is protected, it will just look dirty).
Since my 54 will not really be a daily driver (but with its flat orange and black steelies no show queen either) the paint shop people say: do nothing, just keep the painted surface and fix the dings when it is hurt by gravel or stones.
Your thoughts ?!?!?!
:-)
Hi Kai,
Sounds like you're making fast progress with your truck. Way to go!
What's the weather like where you are? Much rain? I think that would be the determining factor.
I live in southern Idaho, rather dry and usually hot. Rust in not a large factor here. If I lived in a wetter environment like the Northwest Coast here in the States I'd be considering undercoating for my daily driver.
My first picture is in my gallery. More to come.
Best regards,
Paul has it right on. Depends where you live. In Midwest US, rust will destroy your restoration quickly on a driver. You can't help but chip a little paint on these things where the sheetmetal comes together during assembly. Every inch of the bottomside of my truck is covered with rubberized undercoat after prime and paint. It also significantly quiets road noise. The product you refer to does sound like it is for the inside of panels as you stated. If I lived as far from spare body panels as you do, it would be an easy decision whether to undercoat or not.

Just a couple more options......
I've never tried either of these, but seen them mentioned as well.
1.) POR-15
2.) Spraying oil
Here's a thread on spraying oil: https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/bodywork/513.html
Hope this helps.

) It looks like it should hold up pretty good. I applied it over a generous coat of primer and paint on the bottom of the cab, inner fenders, and the underside of the front and rear fenders. It seems pretty durable too, I sprayed my front axle with it and took a scraper to it. Scuffed it a little, but protected the metal. I'm sure it would be a problem at a judged show because its not factory, but since its gonna be a driver also I want it to hold up so I can enjoy it. Otherwise, what's the point?Tyson

I will now research what's available here in Germany. Thanx for all your thoughts. :-)
