Squeaking noise in front suspension at full extension/compression
Well this is the first real problem that I have had with my F-150. I have just under 60K miles on it. When I am driving and get to a situation that will cause the suspension to travel to full extension or compression, there is a noise that doesn't sound good. I can bounce the front end and get the same noise. What should I look into first? Shocks, ball joints, or sway bar links?
I have found that sometimes you will get a squeaking noise from the lower ball joints but i would try to put your hand on the lower control arm and have someone push down on the truck and see if you fell somthing it would be best if you had a drive on hoist put it up and pull up and down on the front bumper and have a look under the truck while the are pulling on the bumper
check the top shock mount bushings. I had the same problem and when I replaced the shocks I found the top bushings were rubbed through on the frame perch. Idle arm was also a problem but squeeked when I turned the wheel. Pitman arm also.
On my '99 F150, it actually turned out to be the front sway bar links rubbing the control arm. With all the other members' experience, it would appear an entire front end rebuild would be in order! And don't forget to send Ford the bill....Good luck. Lou.
to find the noise just take a pool stick or any other wood pole and cut it, put one end on a lower ball joint or i would try the pinman arm ends and put the other end to your ear then have someone bounce the truck. it gives the same effect as a stethescope, it worked for me...give it a try. does it squeak when you turn the wheel?
No squeak when I turn the wheel, just over things like speed bumps. I have been thinking about replacing the shocks. I may do that and take a look around while I am under there for other possibilities.
