I have searched and searched for everything relating to the stock oil cooler on my 95 5.8L with little results. The gasket/o-ring between the cooler and block is leaking like crazy. I have determined it must be a size 11mm hex to remove the cooler but I can't find one locally. Sears has an SK (SET) for 90 bucks that includes a 11mm. I would hate to find out the 11 doesn't fit after I buy it. Local parts stores either carry up to 10mm or 10mm and 12mm but no 11mm. This is to remove the shaft to which you attach the oil filter.
Has anyone ever found replacement o-rings? Ford says the o-rings only come with the oil cooler assembly which is well over 200 bucks.
I have considered removing the oil cooler but I think I will then be faced with the dilemma of finding a shorter shaft that must be installed in the block to attach the oil filter.
Comments, suggestions?
It is hard to rip on my Toyota driving friends when I can't even find the correct tool let alone the parts to repair my Ford.
When I replaced the oil filter adapter o-ring on my 460 I just matched one up at the local hardware store. Cost me about 75 cents.
I don't know if you tried or not, but I believe a 7/16" wrench fits 11mm.
my 97 f250 has the same issue. leaking anti freeze right at the seam between the block and the stock oil cooler. i haven't looked at it yet but is there anything i should keep an eye out for when i get around to fixing this?
i just had my 5.8 rebuilt over the summer and had to remove the oil cooler. ran into the same issue trying to locate the proper size Allen. I just used the biggest size i could get in there which i think was a 10mm and prayed it wouldnt round out which it didnt. you might swing by a machine shop and see if they have one you could rent. if you choose not to run the cooler anymore you will have to run an oil filter from a 90 5.8 just so you know. Personally i would find an o ring and put that thing back on. i couldnt reuse mine due to motor contamination and refused to pay ford $200 for a replacement.
