ABS & VSS Help

1994 Bronco 4WD, 5.0. Here is the problem,Trans intermittently starts shifting hard through the gears and sometimes it feels like it goes into neutral and the ABS light is on.
I drove the truck with a scanner and when the erratic shifting happens it reads 0 MPH on the vehicle speed sensor line,when it shifts normal the scanner reads the correct MPH. I changed the VSS and still the same intermittent problem. all the while the ABS light is on. The trans was rebuilt about a month ago and the vehicle has 110,000 miles. Any help would be appreciated.

The VSS sensor itself rarely ever goes bad. It's just a magnet with two wires coming out of it. It's most likely the wiring between the VSS and the computer that's the problem. It's probably shorted to ground somewhere.

I checked the wiring and all looked ok. The mlps looked in rough shape so i swapped it out, but still the same problem.

When the trans was rebuilt did it come with any sort of warranty? Or it could be that when the trans was installed a wire was pinched???

It came with a warranty and I brought it back to them. They said everthing checked out and that the vss is the problem. I am thinking it has some thing to do with the abs somehow

Ok.....so why not disable the ABS system temporarily and see if anything changes. You brakes will work just fine as a normal non-ABS system, but you will have a yellow ABS warning light on the dash. Then drive it around a bit and see whats what.

Also another possibility is the PSOM (instrument cluster) it is directly connected to trans function, and if it is going bad it will exhibit symptoms of erratic shifting and such.

For the hell of it I would also go over all the battery connections and check/tighten/clean all the ground points on the frame and engine......and check your leads and terminals at the battery.

I had the tranny rebuilt on a 1990 crown vic many moons ago and the check engine light was on after they delievered the car back to me.

Turns out a small ground strap near the firewall was left disconnected from the back of the motor.
