Please help, I have surfed these forums ever since purchasing my Exp 2 years ago and have learned alot.
My particular problem is that earlier in the summer my AWD would not disengage. If I turned the **** to 4 x 4 and drove it then turned **** back to AWD the 4 x 4 light on dash would stay on. I ended up just pulling the driveshaft for the summer months. Now it is getting cold so I figured I would replace the front driveshaft, now I have nothing happening when I place shift **** into 4 x 4 and I can not get truck to go into AWD by spinning wheels in the dirt. The 4 x4 and low range lights do light up at initial start up.
I did check the fuse under hood and it was fine. I need to fix this so I can sell and upgrade.
It could be a sensor related problem. I also have a 99 XLT and had to have both of the sensors replaced on the transfer case before the 4x4 would start working again.
However, I didn't have the same syptoms you started out with, and never pulled the shaft.
It could be the transfer case shift motor, It could have crapped out in the 4wd position, I would look in to this, I just replaced mine, My 4wd would not work at all, but since I replaced the shift motor it works fine
Thank you for the response Jim, After replacing the drive shaft and driving it the AWD still goes into 4x4 although the dash 4x4 swicth is still inop. After driving for awhile it will come out of 4x4. This AWD is so frustrating.
How much did you pay for a shift motor? Did you buy from a stealer or diy?
Thank you - John
You might not believe this but when my 97 got stuck in 4-low it came out only after the battery was disingaged. It has happened a few times and everytime it was fixed by taking off the positive cable for a few minutes...
Truck is fixed. I replaced the transfer case shift motor and cleaned the sensors and now it works great!
Thank you for all the help, what a great resource this site is.
Hi 86. I replaced the shift motor today on my 99 exped and still won't come out of 4wd. I'm not sure what to do next. I check the fuse, it's fine. Not sure where the sensor is that I hear people mention. It still shifts to 4hi and 4low, but wont come out of 4hi. Any ideas where to turn? Can you give me instrutions on removing the front drive shaft. It looks easy enough, but my projects always seem to turn into a nightmare for me.Thanks Matt
First off all I would clean the 2 sensors. One is behind the shift motor and the other one is on the tail of the transmission.
In order to replace the shift motor you would have needed to dismantle the factory wireing and rewire the sensors into the new plug for the shift motor. These sensors are just held in by a 10mm bolt, simply remove bolt, remove sensor and wipe down with a clean rag. My sensors had quite a bit of sludge on them
As far as not coming out of 4x4, are you sure the shaft for the shift motor is ligned up? I would think it would be obvious if it was'nt , just a thought.
Drive shaft is pretty straight forward, just remove bolts holding shaft in. The hardest part is removing the top bolt for the heat shield near the rear u joint. After bolts are out you will most likely need a bar of some sort to pry the shaft away.
I hope I helped you.
Thanks for the reply. I'm getting alittle frustrated with mine being such a problem. I'll try cleaning the sensors and if that doesn't help, I'm taking the shaft out. So I do need to take the 4 bolts out in front and back on the drive shaft. I was hoping for just the front and it sliding off a geared shaft. Thanks again for the reply. Matt
Yes, 4 bolts in front and 4 in back, the heat shield is the pain. You also have to roll the truck in "N" to get access to all the bolts. Replacing the shaft requires more finness, thats why I would try to fix it by cleaning sensors 1st.
Yeah I figured I'd have to get to the back bolts. And I can already feel the skin coming off my knuckles from the heat shield. I cleaned both sensors yesterday afternoon and still have problem. I don't know how to test the sensors to see if they are working or not. I guess that I'll replace them before I take out the drive shaft. I don't know anymore. I'm not a "great" mechanic by any means, but this is ridiculous. Matt
While using my truck this weekend it went into AWD again. I am starting to think the transfer case shift motors job is to just shift and stay in 4x4 mode, AWD on/off must be done by a seperate system?
Any ideas?
Hi 86. Sorry I have no idea what anything does. The little I know is usually wrong. haha. I did finally get around to taking the drive shaft out and I'm the proud owner of a 1999 EB 2x4 expedition now. I didn't completely remove the heat shield. I took out the lower nut and bent the shield out of the way. Loosened the bolts on the shaft with a box end wrench and then used a air wratchet with a long extension to remove the bolts. I think I'm going to order new sensors. Maybe one at a time starting with the front and cross my fingers. Like I said earlier, I'm not a great mechanic, but I can remove and replace OK. Good luck to you. Matt
