Has anyone done this? Is it the same as the Expedition? I just tested the battery and its fine, so I'm guessing its the alternator, but have no idea how difficult it will be. It looks really burried in there!
What is your problem people? You are all supposed to have knowledge of my Navigator and give me advice!!!! BAAHHHH!
LOL, just kidding. :P
Anyhow, I got it off and it is not close to the Expedition. The DOHC intake is so much different than the SOHC. There is a water passage right in the front, just above the alternator that makes taking it out a BITCH! Anyhow, after scraping my arms on the fan shroud and fan, I finally loosened fan from the clutch (cuz I can't get the fan off of the water pump side!) and pulled the shroud up enough to give me room.
Now its too dark and kinda cold out, 55F right now. If I try to fix it now I have a feeling I might miss something. That wouldn't be good!
Oh yeah! The alternator is "D E D" dead! Got a new one from NAPA. No one else had a 130 amp alternator and wanted the same price as NAPA.
I've replaced mine twice, but I managed to twist and turn the thing out without removing the fan or shroud. It's like a puzzle piece coming out and going back in.
You didn't say that you had the DOHC or the SOHC motor or I would have replied. Seems like you made out ok though. About the only thing I would have suggested is disconnecting the battery ground before you began (which you probably did).
I don't know how anyone could have pulled that thing out without the fan and shroud removed. It wasn't easy getting it out once I did all that! Do you have the DOHC or SOHC? DOHC is a real pain because of that water passage on the intake. I don't know what Ford was thinking.
Anyway, Chilton's was a waste of time, because they didn't address the DOHC in that process at all.
