The gas guage on my old truck is weird. Sometimes it says it's full, and sometimes it doesn't. I don't trust it !!! I'm thinking of putting in a new sender unit with float, but before I did I thought I would get the opinion of some people who really know what they're doing !!! Thanks
1. Check the ground connection at the sender. This is usually the culprit. An intermitant short (fraying wire) can make irratic readings.
2. Check the wiring at the gage (same reasons).
3. Pull the sender and check that the float still floats and that the wire running down the sender arm is in tact and connections are good.
I had a sender once that had crud on the coilings inside the float where the wires meet the coil. I cleaned it off and when I sold it year slater it was working fine. I had to bend open a few connections that werent meant to be opened back up though.
