Question Holley carb question

I finally got the numbers off my carb and decided to look it up to see what size carb I had. The list number on the carb was 8007. 3174 was listed below(not sure if that matters). The carb was on the truck when I purchased it. According to holley's site its a 390cfm 4-barrel. One question I had was if this carb should even be on my 390cid? Holley's site says that this carb is for small block V8's and 6cyl's. Also, there are several tubes coming from the carb with machine screws stuck in the to plug them. It doesn't look like the electric choke is connected either. I have no clue when it comes to carbs so if anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Below is the link on holley's site that I believe is the carb I have. Please double check me and make sure I am correct.

If you are correct on the CFM, it seems too small. The Holley web site lists a carb in the 600-670 cfm range. How does the truck run?

FYI, The 3174 is a date code. It decodes to November 1974.

I reread my post and I see it's not clear. I meant to say the Holley site suggests using a carb in the 600 cfm range. If you are correct, your carb is a little over half what the engine needs.

Um...what size is your engine? Your post says it's 390cid, did you mean to say that the engine is a 300cid and your carb is a Holley 390? If that's the case, then the carb is not too big, I'd say it's just right. Also if that's the case, some tuning might be in order since '79super says your carb is 32 years old.

If your engine is a 390cid, then I'd say a Holley 390 is too small! (but then again, I've never heard of a 390cid engine size, but what do I know?!)

Yeah the engine is 390 cubic inches and according to Holley's website the the carb is a 390cfm 4-barrel carb. Here is the link to the holley page. http://www.holley.com/0-8007.asp\ The list number on the carb is 8007. As far as tuning goes I got the technical information for the carb from holley's site and I'm gonna work on that this weekend. The instructions are detailed so I shouldn't have a problem. Hopefully I can wake the engine up a little with some adjustments.

I'd doubt you'll get much out of that carb, unless you have two of them on a dual quad intake. You have enough CFM to turn about 2700rpm.
CI x RPM / 3456 = required CFM
390 x 5000 / 3456 = 564.42 CFM
390 x 2700 / 3456 = 315.97 CFM

So you realistically need a 600CFM carb.

I am guessing that I should put a bigger carb on my 390 since I'm gonna be pulling that camper. I've got some hills that I'll be climbing and I don't want that carb to hold my engine back. Any suggestions on a carb?

I would go with either a 600 Edelbrock or 600 Holley.
