1965 F-350
Hi, I just purchased this '65 F-350 with a 300 six and what I think is a 3 speed with a granny gear. This thing hasn't been on the road for at least 4 years but I drove it home, about 85 miles, with no problems. Only thing was I could'nt get the thing over 45, sounded like it was geared real low and screaming. Can anyone tell me where I can get some info about the drive trains that were available for this beast. Thanks

It is a 4 speed (since it has the granny gear), either a T-98 or a T-18 most likely, and you can check the ratio on the rear end.
If the truck has 5 lugs and the nuts are in the front of the differential, look for a tag held on by one of the nuts. This will be a Ford 9" rear.
If it has 8 (which is the most likely since it is a 350), look for a tag or stampings on the axle tube.
You can also post the rear axle code, and we can decode it for you, if the tag and rear axle are original to the truck.
Post the entire warranty plate information, and we can do it all!

F 350s of the 61 66 vintage will have SIX lug wheels from the factory.
Eight lugs do not come in to play untill 68 on the F350s
The ratio is identified by a letter or number under the rear axle section on the warranty tag. Post this and we can tell you the ratio. Typically these had eaton rears.

F35 = F350
J = 6 cyl 1 bbl 240 CID
E = Mahwah, NJ assembly plant
627766 - Dec '64
Wheel base - 132
Color - J = Red
Model - F-350
Body - 581 5 is the trim scheme, Red (is this correct), 81 is conventional cab
Trans - N = New Process 435
Axle - 29 = Spicer 70 with a ratio of 5.87:1, rated at 7,400 lbs.
129 HP @ 4000 RPM = Rated correctly for the 240
Is there another number or code listed in front of the rear axle code? Perhaps between the Trans and Axle code? If so, it will indicate the front axle rating.
