I've got a bare bones 1994 Ranger and I want to put a radio in it. The plugs are in the dash, but there are no wires that go to the doors. Do I have run my own speaker wires, or are they there up under the dash somewhere?
Did it come with a stock radio? If so, one of the stock plugs (I believe the grey one) is speaker wires. My '94 had a black plug (power, ground, etc.) and a grey plug (speakers). You buy an adapter from Walmart or the like, then strip and connect the wires from the adapter to the pig tail that came with the radio.
No it has no radio whatsoever. I removed the cover, the plugs are there going into the harness, but there are no wires to the doors. I want to know if I have run my own wires to the doors, or are the wires to the doors tucked up under the dash....
Ok, I looked all under the dash, no wires for the speakers, although there is the harness. Are they just snipped off or something? I don't want to tear the harness apart, how does the dealer install a radio?
That's interesting. The harness is there you say. Do you mean both are there, grey and black? If so, the grey one is the speaker wires. The wires don't just hang free, they are part of the grey harness (that's all the grey harness is).
The dealer just opens up the appropriate sized hole, then plugs in the radio to the harnesses and hooks the antenna up, and adds speakers as necessary.
Ok, maybe you're not understanding me. The plugs are there. Both Black and Grey, they go into a wrapped harness. THERE ARE NO WIRES TO THE SPEAKERS. I want to know where they are, if they're wrapped in the harness, non existent or what.
If you indeed, as it turns out, have no harness running to the doors and it is just not wrapped up in some manner, I'm sure an average install shop carries harnesses for that sort of issue.
You have to tell us, otherwise, what the deal is. Very few of us have non-radioed Rangers here. Even my 94 XLT, while a base model in many aspects (drivetrain, no power options), certainly has radio and AC.
Maybe someone with a factory wiring schematic will chime in here...I left my Ranger manual (assuming it even helps any) at my other hideout this week...
If you can not figure out the factory wiring it may be best to follow the directions provided to you with the stereo you purchased. Wiring door speakers in a ranger is very easy, you will need to remove the door and kick panel but it is simple...JPC
