I have 71 F100 thats stock with the exception of PertronixII igniter and matching ingnition coil(302 with C4 tranny).
I am going to pick up what appears to be a 1973 351 windsor tommorow.
The 302 in my truck runs good but is getting tired, 160k.
I plan to rebuild the 351 if rebuildable, if not at least use the heads when the 302 gets rebuild.
I did a search on 302 to 351w swaps, but still not sure what parts would swap from my motor to the 351.
My goal is to get a little more power and to keep it mild and streetable.
The guy with the 351w said it came from a 73 Turino. I don't know for sure.
I appreciate any insight you guys can give.
If this is indeed a 351 Windsor it will be a bolt it swap, accessories and all, just be sure to use the flywheel from the 351.
the only thing you will have to do depending on your present exhaust system is widen it a bit, as 351Ws are wider than 302s.
As a side note back in the early-mid 70s Ford did the einy-meiny-miney -moe on 351s, your friend may have a Cleveland 351, that will also go into your truck, but it will take just a little more doing than the 351W.
Thanks Mike and Supercab.
I brought the motor home last night, it is a 351w. The number on the block is D2AE-6016 and the heads are D00E and look to be rebuildable.
I was not able to pull the oil pan because I don't have an engine stand...yet. The motor is not locked and appears to be stock bore.
There was no flywheel with the motor, but I will check with the seller and see if he has still got it.
What is the differance between the 71 302 flywheel and the flywheel that fits the 351w.
The balance weight of the flywheel is the same until the mid 80's when the 302 went to a 50 oz. weight. Din't know if the 351 ever changed. You can tell the difference by looking at the two. The 50 oz. is bigger.
Thanks JTY and Supercab
I probabably won't get to far ahead of myself until the block, crank
and heads get a clean bill of health from the machine shop.
The truck has a running 302 in it know, so the 351 will be a winter project.
My goal is to take my time with the 351 rebuild and learn
all I can along the way.
I've got a 351W in my 72 and the only thing that I wish that I had for it was a 4bbl carb and intake... and maybe a cam, and some performance heads, and......
The 351W does great! Mine was already in the truck when I bought it so I'm not 100% sure but I think that it came out of a 73 LTD. Got the C4 behind it too. That truck has a lot of torque and pulling power. Sounds like a great swap to me. My dad has an article written by Jack Roush on the interchangabilty of 351W parts to the 289 and 302 block. You can make 300 hp with all stock parts!
