Post puller tool for power steering pump pulley

I'm ready to replace my power steering pump in my 1992 Ford F150 4.9L six, pick up truck.

I am trying to find out the correct Snap-on puller for this job.

Any help would be appreciated. It seems like a staight forwrd process but any tip for this replacement would be appreciated.

Thanks.

These type pullers are quite expensive to buy.

You might be able to borrow one from autozone because of their "lend a tool" program.
Other parts place have a tool program also.

Good luck.

*Lisle* makes one that cost $100.00 here in Canada

puller tool for power steering pump pulley

If you aren't going to use it very often you may be better off just buying a cheap one. I got a HarborFreight one for $20 and have used it twice with no problems. If you do get one, make sure it will both pull and then push on the pulley, some brands sell them as two seperate tools.

go to the snap on website. they are pretty expensive. unless you plan on using it a lot i would either borrow one from a parts store or buy an inexpensive one(also from the same parts store)

2 push the pulley back on the shaft, use a bolt screwed in2 the ennd of the shaft with a jam nut on a flat washer.position the pulley and tighten as the washer presses on the pulley.

Those pulleys are difficult at best to get off. You can get a pump with a pulley at Auto Zone for not that much more and save the aggravation.

For less than professional use I would get a less expensive puller. Also any pump that I have ever replaced always came with a bolt for pushing on the pulley. A pulley is not at all difficult to pull with a proper tool. The difference between the ease of most tasks for the pro or the shade tree mechanic is the quality of his tools.

They sell the pulley seperate. You just have to ask for it.

I agree. Rent don't buy. It is a tool you'll use once in a blue moon. If ever again. When I changed the pump on the Explorer I "rented" the tool from Pep Boys. I left a deposit and when I returned the tool I got the deposit back = FREE. This policy is not uncommon.

Good luck.

On some vehicles the pulley has to come off to get the pump out of the mounting bracket. Chalk up another one for the geniuses at Ford.

I bought a p.s. pump pulley for about $20 at Advance Auto Parts or Autozone (I forget) and it worked well enough on a Chevy with an impact tool. I can't see the Ford being worse.

I bought the Lisle tool for $47, it also is an installer. Sure is handy to have... if you have a Lincoln or Taurus type engine, you need it to be able to get the ps pump off if servicing the head gasket or such... the Lisle tool is also universal, will work on Ford, GM, and Chrysler for a minimum. Snap On will likely have it as a Blue Point. If you really want Snap on, here is the page: Snap On puller They make you buy a bunch of pieces to do the same thing the Lisle does for less pieces and price. I bought my set from Northern Auto, northernautoparts.com, for $47, item # is 38850. (link was blocked)
