Hey guys I'm just about to order everything to overhaul my dana 60 rear for my 74 highboy. I'll be ordering 4.56 gears, Detroit locker, seals, bearings... etc. What I want to know though is can I convert a 16 spline to a 30 spline.
What would be needed to do this? I'm thinking axles. Anything else? The Detroit locker I'll be buying will be a 30 spline ofcourse.
I really need your help on any of the specifics.. What parts exactly do I need to do this right? any problems I should expect????
if you get the 30 spkine locker...then all you need to go with it is the shafts
if your gonna go through all this trouble...why not upgrade to 35 spline dana 70 shafts and run a 35 spline 60 detroit...all you have to do is get teh spindles bored out to 1.6" so they are the same dimensions as a 70
Thanx for the info, I knew it was do-able with 16 spline to 30 spline, but was unaware that those were the only differences between between dana 60 and 70. That's good info and I'll definately be looking at that option.
I have another question. Everywhere I look for axles, they say they are custom axles and can be cut to any length. I just want stock length axles. Do I cut them meyself? or do I have to measure them and send them the length to have them cut???? If so from what point to what point do I have to measure the axles?
find a set out of a 75-79 ford rear 60....there are millions of them
thats not the only differences in the 70...the 70 has a 10.54" ring gear, larger carrier bearings, pinion bearings, larger axle tubes etc etc...
instead of spending all this $$ on the 60 and not really upgrading the strength that much....why not find a 70 with the gears you need and move the perches and bolt it inyour truck???
Thanx, I guess I'll look at the 70's closely as an alternative. I was looking at Yukon gears, and Moser for 30 spline axles. They all speak of custom cut axles for the length I need. I wasn't really looking at OEM used axles. I was looking at after market performance axles that's why I was asking.
dont buy from moser....their axles are terrible, their customer service is terrible and their warranty is terrible.
yukon makes a better chromo axle
Good to know. The gears I'm getting are yukon gears.... I guess if I go with the 30 spline I'll go with a Yukon Axle. Do you know why length is an issue when ordering an axle?
