It all stated when had fuel in my vac lines and it idled around 1500. so I changed the fuel pressure regulator and the spark plugs. Now it idles where its suppost to but it runs rough and smells rich.is there something I over looked. Also the guy I got the car from ran it with a bad fuel pressure regulator for about a month.
try replacing the fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve. The O2 sensor is probably carboned up, replace it too.
If your engine was running really rich, the catylitic convertor could be carboned and restricts the exhaust flow. Check the exhaust pressure at the exhaust pipe end with the engine running.
Yeah and even though you put in new plugs, actually because you did, check them again. You can tell what is going on inside the engine this way. If black, the computer is running it too rich. If white, too lean. Check all 6. If you see one side rich/lean and the other side OK, you have a bad O2 sensor on that goofy side...or some other issue affecting only that side...like a head gasket leak or a cracked head or a cracked cylinder wall.
Can you check computer codes too? Maybe no check engine light but maybe you have codes present that will help diagnos.
I forgot to mention I have repalced the air filter pcv valve and the fuel filter. The plugs looked normal.I tested every sensor today the Throttle Position,Mass Air Flow ,Intake Air Temperature,Idle Air Control, and the Crankshaft Position sensor.the only thing I didnt test was the camshaft position sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor and the o2 sensor.I also posted wrong I have a 92 mazda navajo. It only has one 02 sensor.
Oh that's unfortunate - gives you a little less troubleshooting options with just 1 O2. But did you check the plugs again now after you replaced them? If they are black, then it is truely rich...then why? For $40, might as well swap out the O2. 9/10 times this is the issue. It's that 1/10 time that we really need to scratch our heads. Another thing is codes again, to see what the computer thinks is going on. Without the codes, I would only go so far as swapping the O2 before swapping other components. the O2 is the main A/F mix controller. All the others have limited affect and onlyused for fine tuning. O2's can vary the mixture +/- 20% - that's the max range in the program.
There is a way of testing the 02 sensor with a digital ohms meter?
buy a can of throttle body cleaner and shoot down the throttle body with the engine on, have some one or yourself rev the engine when you spray it in the throttle body.
Verify all vacuum hoses are not cracked or frayed. Especially the one vacuum which had gas in it, gas will melt plastic and some rubber. R&R if necessary.
I should mention since i have driven it a few times now. it runs great, it just stumbles, surges and smells rich at idle.I will check for codes and try to disconnect the o2 sensor plug to test it with a digital meter.which should be fun with the connector is between the firewall and pass. side cylinder head. All the vac. hoses are ok.Can I shoot throttle body cleaner down the throttle body.It has a sticker on it saying do not clean consult owners manual.I dont have a manual so I dont know what thats suppost to mean.
The can should read throttle body cleaner, not carb cleaner. It should be fine.
Your explorer is going to have a 4.0liter and will have two O2 sensor on each exhaust pipe off each manifold.
Autozone web site says one O2 - I checked. Did you disconnect the battery to clear the PCM learned correction factors? After making all these corrections, the PCM might be overcompensating.
I have crawled under it and I have only one o2 sensor.I also checked codes and found none.I did however find a major vaccume leak. The pevious owner somehow hooked the windshield washer hose onto the manifold vac port.I had the car running and went to add washerfluid and when I pulled off the resorvor cap I thought it was going to suck me in.
1992 mazda navajo= $700
tune-up= $30.00
finding windshield washer hooked up to intake= priceless
