Okay here is another one for you all knowing enthusiasts. When I have my travel trailer plugged in or the flatbed trailer plugged in, sometimes my truck dies when I step on the brakes. So I'm thinking it has something to do with the brake controller but can't think of why it would stall the truck. It doesn't do it all the time and will start right back up. It does it in gear. I don't think it has done it in park. I also noticed if the controller is turned up it seems to do it a little more often. It only does it when I have a trailer with brakes plugged in. With no trailer it never does it. That a good one huh? Think about that one and let me know all your ideas. Thanks guys! You guys have been right on the money everytime. THANK YOU!
My first thought was the magnets and drums were corroded causing high amp draw, but that would mean both trailers are in the same shape; not very likely. The harness on your truck might be chafed and intermittently shorting on bare metal, depending on movement, wind, etc. Just a thought.........
How do you have your brake controller wired? It should have a fused circuit of at least 30 amps, and if you have the tow packaqge you should have a connection under the dash along with a wiring harness and some relays and fuses that you need to install made specifically for this. Sounds like you cut into some circuit that is part of the engine management and you are either getting a back circuit or ground getting into the engine management circuitry and causing it to go gaga. Is the brake controller separately fused to protect the truck wiring?
Yep it has a 30 amp cicuit breaker and the wiring harness. It was all plug and play. That is why I don't get what is going on. This isn't the first controller I have installed. The first one in this truck though.I'll have to go trace through everything and see if there is anything hoaky going on. I bought this truck used about a year ago and see that there used to be a controller in it but they took it out.
