i have a 73 econoline 200 ford van, it used the same 302 as the f-100/150's used in the 70's
i have an oil leak coming fromt he top of then engine, all i can say so far is that it leaks alot of oil and that i havent been able to take the time to look at it,
is there any oil problems with the early 70's 302?
I got a newly built 302 with no problem; an prior to rebuild it only shown oil around valve covers gaskets.
I recommend you post this thread under the engine performance section under the 302 post. Those folks are the guru's for engine problems.
Installed rebuilt 70 Torino 302 in 65 F100 about 3 years ago. After while finding excess oil in engine compartment. Went thru and re-torqued, oh what a difference. May want to check V-cover gaskets they are notorious for leaking. If engine has lot of miles then usally find engine leaking from every place imaginable. Suggest run a search and narrow field to 302 engine forum 'oil leak', or something simular. Believe in around mid 70's, at least in Ca., the 302 heads were changed for smog purposes not sure if resulted in lot of excess 'blow by' in engine compartment.
These are also notorious for leaking at the front of the intake manifold! I have always heard never use the cork gasket that comes with the set for the front or the back. You should run a thick bead of rtv across there and make that the gasket. Just another spot to check for a leak.
Oh ya, the darn intake manifold gasket. Experience simular problem only it concerned locating a water leak. Posted topic in the 'engine forum' 302 section. Majority of the responses directed me to the intake manifold gasket, in particular as Jason indicated, the end pieces. There seemed to be couple schools of thought from whether to use gasket, sealant, or combination of both. Went with quality gasket and sealant which solved the problem. Torque value and tighening sequence is important.
im leaking oil from every gasket on my 302 plus an oil pan leak... I think I lose about 2 quarts a week. I think I'm going to do a full gasket and oil pan replacement this summer.
