Need some F550 V10 input please

I'm in the process of rigging up a small dump truck for my landscape supply centre which will be used to deliver 1-4yd loads of various products (mulch, sand , deco. rock etc.). Deliveries will be in a 15 mile radius or less and operating 8-9months a year 10,000 miles a year.

My question is I have located a 2004 F550, C&C, 4x4, V10, 6 spd with 40,000 kms ( 24,000 miles ) and wonder if anyone on this site has a similiar truck used in maybe a similiar application. If so do your regret not diesel or the contrary.
Appreciate any imput from the wise people on this forum

How is the ride in the newer F550's

Thanks Kevin

In this case either would be good for you. Of course the diesel is preferred for heavy pulling but the V10 will do it just as well as long as its geared properly and if the deal is cheap, go for it. With only 10,000 miles a year the V10 would probably be cheaper in the long run. I don't what gears the offered the F550 in 2004. I know the 05/06s are either 4.88s or 5.38s and with those gears, it will pull the loads fine.

I went with the truck craft steal insert and I added 2.5' sides on it. I have dumped it with two yards of top soil... with no problems. I have had it in since Oct. and I love it. I went with truck craft because I have friends in the landscaping business and they have had one for years with no problems at all. I haven't heard of any problems with the ez dumper. However, it is darn near 1/2 the price. Althrough, I believe that you get what you pay for.

As for the V10. I like it except for the fuel issue... 7.5 - 8.5 mpg

Thanks Jim

Do you mean the EZ is 1/2 more or less. I have seen the EZ up here.

Thanks for the reply

The EZ is about 1/2 the price, less, of the truckcraft. However, since you are looking at it for business... It might be worth the extra. You don't want downtime.

Thanks for clearing that up Jim, and you are absolutely right, there usually is a reason when something cost more.

Happy New Year

For short hauling, the V10 is fine, and probably better for abuse (short hauling less than 5 miles)than the diesel, especially if you have delivery drivers that won't warm up an engine properly. The V10 will warm up quicker than a diesel as it has a lot less cast iron. It will also prove cheaper to maintain and cost less to do oil changes. If you were long hauling, I wouldn't even look at the V10 in that application.
