I want to put a cam in my truck it is a 77 ford f-250 wheel drive with a 400 I was thinking about putting a cam in it I already have a edelbroch manifold and carb. I was woundering how hard it is to do it the truck I am sure I can do it becouse i put the manifold on it and i changed the timing chain a couple years ago but i dont no if I have to shim the folcrom bolts. Also I dont no if there is enof room to slide the cam out or if I have to take off the grill. If anyone has any suggestions please write back becouse i dont want to tare it al apart then find out i have to pull the motor
thank you
I am completely rebulding my 77 f250 4x4-----Here is the cam and related equipment---Energizer(Crane)Cam--#133042\\you get the lifters FREE-when you order the cam-----#99280-16\\valve springs\retainer kit---------#52800-16\\steel rocker arms-------#36806-16\\Fulcrum conversion kit--well worth the money i think---The total for these four items is 413.35--ordered thru Summit----Crane recommends their hardened pushrods #-52623-16 for $96.69----but you don't need hardened pushrods withthis cam---you can order a set of pushrods from comp cams for $29.95---#CCA-7837-16 If you go to Crane cams website----they have all the info on each cam--its very easy to navigate---fd
I am getting ready to put a CompCams 268H in my 460. Read all of the footnotes on the camshaft that you pick. This is the biggest cam that Comp. makes that doesn't require longer pushrods. When camshafts get up to a certain lift, they must make the basecircle of the lobes smaller so that the lobes will clear the cam bearings. You should never have to shim the rockers unless either the fulcrum or rocker is wore out. If they are not wore then longer pushrods are needed. Shimming the rockers changes the geometry of the rockers and can cause the rockers to fide unevenly on the valve and cause premature failure. If you have any questions e-mail the cam manufaturer and they can answer all of your questions. CompCams was good about responding to my needs. Jimmy
Brandon, What do you want to acheive with the cam upgrade. Will you be racing the truck, using it for pulling???

I also recommend a double-roller timing set installed at 0* advance/retard to go along with the goodies John advised.

are you going to degree your camshaft if not you may lose some hp & torque because your cam is not opening up at the right time there is more to putting a camshaft in that just sticking it in with out degreeing you will not get the most out of your camshaft and lifter combo they are several good articles on how to degree a cam if you dont know how write back and I will Explain it to you .
ok but can I put the cam In while the motor is still in the truck the truck is used for mostly pulling and iam running 38.5 inch swampers on it with 4.56 gears
You don't have to pull the motor, but you will have to take out the radiator and the grill. Really not that bad a job - you're due for new anti-freeze anyway, right?
Take a look at the specs on a stock 351M cam, just for reference. That's one cam that really wakes up a 400 without having to make any other modifications to the valvetrain, without much change elsewhere except to the ignition timing, it still idles smooth, and gas mileage will still be...as good as can be expected.

I appolgize for not answer the whole question redbob is right you can do the cam change by removing your radiator and grill.now another question for you have you decided on a camshaft yet if not a word to the wise you cant put just any cam in that engine 351C&M engines come from the factory with positve stop rocker arms if you get over .500 lift you must take the heads off and have the machine shop machine the rocker pedastal and install adjustable studs and guide plates and then with guideplates you must run hardened pushrods the last set I had done run about 60.00 for mach. work and about 190.00 for studs and guide plates . They make a set of rocker arms that is suppose to do the same thing never had any luck from that set up hope this help you out
