Well, I have one of the great 05's that pump the exhaust straight into the cab like some others. I've had it to the shop multiple times and it is just not getting any better. Has anyone found a way to put a cabin air filter back in these trucks??? I know ford quit putting them in a while ago, but a carbon cabin air filter would help a ton in cutting down on the stink! I can seriously smell cig smoke if someone is in front of my truck at a light and their window is down. It's like this truck pulls in everything around it. I love the truck, but this is getting to be B*** S*(* having paid 45 grand for a truck that makes you sick to drive and none of the ford dealerships giving a rip about it.
My Dodge did the same thing...so did my Chevy, I haven't noticed my 05 SD being any worse than any other truck I've owned.
I just turn off my heat/AC until I get through the light then flip it back on.
Simply flip the switch to "MAX" as you are slowing down for the light and either leave it there or return to whatever you want when you start moving again. In the summer here in MD, I always leave the AC on "MAX" and windows stay up. I hate the outside noise polution as well as the exhaust fumes.
I've been doing the switch to max trick, but this is bs that we pay 45 grand for a truck and have to do this stuff. Gotta be some way to fix this problem.
I thought the problem was a broken or cracked "Y-pipe" in the exhaust system... and it was allowing exhaust into the cabin this way?
Here is Ford's TSB that may answer your questions/problems. It is posted on the dieselman's website of 6.0L TSB notices.
Exhaust Smell in Cab:
If an exhaust smell is present in the cab, inspect for leaks at the exhaust manifolds. Ford's procedure calls for warming up the truck to operating temperature, then shutting off the engine, remove the EBP sensor and use a smoke machine to feed smoke into the exhaust system. Inspect each exhaust port, manifold flange and Y-pipe joint for smoke leakage. I find using a length of hose as a stethyscope while the engine is running works well to pinpoint exhaust leaks. If a leak is found at the exhaust manifold, replace only the manifold gasket that is leaking (I think this should read INSTALL a gasket, since originally there are no gaskets at the manifolds). Good luck and I hope this helps you get some assistance from your dealer.
