Well these trucks don't actually have a cabin air filter to replace but you can put one in it fairly easily if you want. I did in mine and it really does help.
Under the RH side of the dash, you will see a "slit" about the size you described in the plastic cover under the dash. I took a pocket screwdriver and a hammer and punched through the plastic. Its really thin plastic - once you break through it just take the screw driver and run it around the door cutout and then pull the plastic down. Then stick the filter in the hole and the bottom of the filter serves as the door for the filter.
