Unhappy 63 f100 engine upgrade?

Hello All!

This is my first post. I have tried searching and read quite a few posts learning that I have a T98 trans and I am not sure what engine, I am assuming it is a 352. It has the exhaust header pipe running up top in front of the engine.

My question is, is it better to rebuild the original engine, or put a 360 390 engine in. Or will the 360 390 even bolt up to the T98 trans? sorry for my ignorance. I did try to search on engines to find more out about them first.

I know that the mounts would be different, mine has the three point with one on the front.

I am curious about costs for either rebuilding the original (which I still don't even know which one it is...292 352??) or getting a later model 360 390.

and if a better option is to put a 360 390 in, what places have you used that may have one ready to ship for a good price?

This is a Great forum! and I Thank you all in advance for your help!

I will get some pictures coming!

Its a Y-block engine, probably a 292......

Im not sure how cost-effectively they can be rebuilt, maybe some one else will chime in.

what condition is the engine in? and if you get rid of it, how much and where is it located?

63 only had the 292 not 352

Thanks for the info. I have kept reading and found that there is a whole section on engines here!!...I am a NOOB! I checked the castings and it is a 292 C2AE

I still need to find out what common engine will bolt up to that trans. I have a local 360 and 390 here that are ready to go... and that is why I was hoping it would bolt up.

The engine is actually in great shape, other than it has been sitting and needs gaskets due to external leaks, carb rebuilt because fuel is leaking out the sides.

the Vin of the truck is F10CR351132

I am in Utah. I am not sure what it is worth. I would be happy to receive offers however.

Thanks for the quick reply and info.
Dave.

352/390 series are refered to as FE engines. Putting one in would be a great swap, and they will work with your transmission, but Not with that bell housing. there are bell housings that will work, though. There are 2 styles of bell housing used for the FE engines, the one that will allow a t98 or t18 to bolt up is commonly called the early style, though it was used along with the later stule. I think they are common on 4x4s into the early 70s.

As for IDing your motor, the cross over exhaust pipe and distributor in the back are unique to the 292 series engines. FE engines have the distributor in the front, and the intake manifold mates up to the head under the valve cover.

If you want a FE locate a 65 66 F350 or above and these will have a tri mount system in them like the 63. otherwise you will need a new front crossmember and transmission mount.

65 and 66 bellhousings used a shorter input shaft length and different diameter and spline and throwout bearing on the trans than the 64 and earlier models..do you know what length, dia, and spline the 65-66 F350 were?
