4 speed transmission tough to shift from 2nd to 3rd.
Hello!
I have a 66 F100 4x4 with a 352 and 4spd transmission. My trans has developed a problem. The transmission is difficult to shift from 2nd into 3rd gear.
No problems removing it from second just going to third. I have not noticed any problems from 4th down to third, at least not yet.
Any ideas as to the problem in the transmission?
**Anyone have suggestions or a good source for 4sd. repair parts?
Thanks.
Steve

that could be just about anything, from a stiff shifter boot, to a bent mainshaft. It would help to know how it's difficult. is it just realy hard to move over to 3rd, or does it sound like it's grinding, or does it act like it misses the gear when you shift?
It also depends on which 4 speed you have. but some common problems are dirt in the centering spring, and worn out cup on the shift fork selector. when was the last oil change, and was there any signs of metal in it?

that sounds like the 2nd-3rd syncro ring is worn down or sticking, though it could still be a problem with the shift forks hanging up.
Is it easier to shift when double clutching, or, is it easier to shift if you pull back into 4th before shoving it forward into 3rd? the first indcates syncro trouble, the second leans toward shifter fork troubles.
Another check is to drain the oil and look for metal. Silver is steel or aluminum, some is normal, chunks are bad. Gold is the brass from the syncros. small amounts are normal, large flakes or chunks are bad. large amounts of either can gum up the shifter forks.

trans trouble
Hey 66 beater thanks for the info. Sounds like it may be the syncro then because sometimes is is better if I double clutch it. No problem on the down shift from 4th to third.
Any suggestions for repair pointers or where I can get the repair items I need?
what repair manual would you recomend if any? Chilton?
Thanks

I'm still hunting a good manual specific to the t98, but the t18 and t19 are essentualy the same, so a Chiltons or ford manual for them will work. These are some of the easiest transmissions to work on. There are several outfits online that sell parts for these, one being http://www.drivetrain.com/borgwarnerT18T19.html . But there are others, as this transmission was used in jeeps, and is a popular retrofit into newer jeeps.
