Question What transmission do I have?

My transmission went out on my 93 Ranger 4.0 5-speed 4x4. I was just wondering what transmission this is. I believe they put different ones (Mazda, Ford, Mitsu?) in these trucks over the years.

Thanks.

It's a M5OD.

Here's what happened to my tranny. If anybody knows what might be wrong, I'd appreciate it.

I had just got done driving on the interstate and was exiting. At the end of the exit was a stoplight and I was turning left. It seemed a little difficult to put in 1st gear. When I took off and tried to shift into 2nd all I got was a thud and grinding in every gear. It wouldn't shift at all. I coasted up and over the interstate back down the other side and pulled into a parking lot. It would know go through the gears (except 5th) but it required a pretty decent effort. Also, if you have it in neutral and let out of the clutch, the motor pulls down a couple hundred RPM. The truck shudders really bad in reverse and seems binding up. It won't roll easily in reverse. It really thumps pretty bad in forward gears too. I still can't get it to go in 5th. Clutch action is fine. Pedal firmness is the same and its full on clutch (brake) fluid. I'm about to pull my drain plug to check the tranny fluid for shavings.

I have to wonder how much ATF is in that tranny, given the history of shift rail plugs on the M5OD .

Drained out? Yes very possible. Though you wouldn't notice just sitting at your house, as it may just drip slightly, once you start driving those plugs just shoot out ATF. And we all know, no fluid = bad bad bad bad bad for tranny

It sounds to me like that slave is low on brake fluid. Check the small bottle on the firewall on behind the under hood electircal box. When that gets low the clutch ether doesn't work or doesn't work very well. I've seen this happen on many cars. It could be a leak or it could just be that your clutch is almost worn out and requires more fluid in the resevior to take up the different. It's just like your brakes. If the master cylinder gets low on fluid your brakes are usually worn out or almost work out. It's something to try, let up knoe what happens.

As I said in my first post, its full of fluid. The shop pulled it out today. Bad news of course. They said the fluid was gray with metal shavings and my clutch was worn down the the rivits. The clutch part is hard to believe since it never slipped at all. How much does it run for a rebuild on an M5OD?

~$800, more since a shop is doing it.

The clutch part does seem hard to believe if it didn't slip much. They do wear out over time yeah, but hmm.
