Please give me a chance B4 you send this to engine swap. I am planning on setting up my 87 4x4 shortbed Ranger XL for a mud toy. Step 1 will include installing a clutch set (currently auto), 4 spd and t-case. (Probably the 2.5 in body lift as well). I have a 2.8 L to use for the time, but I want to put on some big tires (35x12.5R15). I dont think the clearance will be an issue, and if so, I will back down a size or 2.
When the 2.8 blows, I will replace with a 302. Already have the block, oil pan, accessories, just no mounts, headers, or internals yet.
My 2.8 is in an 84 4x2 5spd. The truck has very rusty cab, no fuel tank, and a rusty bed. The 4x4 body is excellent. The 87 2.8 and AOD is out of the truck. The t-case and drive shafts are still installed. I also have an 85 4x4 4 spd that was mated to a 2.8. My biggest concern is will the Toyo-Koga 4 spd stand up to the 302. It will be 8.0-8.5 compression, Comp cams XE250H, KB pistons with Total seal gapless rings, stock 77 heads (T-bird), and 2 bbl induction (carb currently on 2.8). How will this work? Should I look more @ 33s or 32s? I appreciate any feedback.
I'm with Ken, doubt the tranny could take the stress for long. If you want it to be a mud toy, it'll have to be able to take lots of stress. You're going to need something more heavy duty than that in the long run.
I've heard of using 32's and 33's, neither seem to be a big problem. Take your pick.
The 302 will not bolt up to any Ranger transmission. Start looking for a 302 Bronco or F150 4x4 transmission and transfer case. When installed in a Ranger chassis, you will have to shorten the fuel tank or add another dual tank like early Rangers had behind the rear axle. Many parts for 302 Ranger swaps are available, but it can't be done on the cheap.
Is there a 'cheap' tranny that shares a toyokoga bell mount pattern that will bolt to my t-case, or maybe a NP208. I know its Chevy, but you just cant beat a 4.11 Lo range. I have found a bellhousing w/ hydro clutch that will bolt, but I really cannot afford any pricey items, My neighbor fabed me up a set of mount adapters when we installed his 351. I'll be running stock 77 t-bird manifolds and 2bbl carb. No more than about 250...275 ft.lbs. and that is if I get very lucky. Small cam, stock heads, dual 1 7/8" or single 2.25, shift @ 1250, dont go past 3500.
