I have an '05 Explorer that will need tires rotated soon, at how many miles are you guys rotating your tires? Do you rotate front to back, X pattern?
Do you use a torque wrench / how many pounds of torque? Which tool do you use?
I remember Ford having problems with warped rotors in the past because of improperly tightening the wheels...
Your help will be greatly appreciated......
Haven't rotated on my '05 yet, but used to rotate every 5k on my '97.
I used a Sears wrench @100 ft-lbs, I believe.
Not sure what the 2005 torque spec. is.
Front to back x pattern torque is 100 ft/lb,i rotate mine on my 05 every other oil change @6000 miles books says to do them at 5000 mile intervals. so far tires wearing well
I recommend swapping the tires left to right that are going ONTO the primary drive wheels.. in other words LF to RR, RF to LR, LR to LF, and RR to RF.
100 ft/lb is still the torque spec i believe.
I've been rotating tires like that for years, never had a customer complain yet (except when their rear tires were so choppy that when moved to the front caused a pull or steering vibration)
Thanks for all the replys, I am now looking for either a torque wrench or a "Torque Stick" to torque the lugnuts. By the way... Torque on the 05 Explorer is 100lbs.
The only way the torque sticks are effective is if you calibrate your impact to it.
In other words.. use full power with 100ft/lb torque stick, then double check torque... if it's less than 100ft/bl then you need a more powerfull impact.. if more than try the next power setting down, loosen nut, and repeat.
A lot of people thing the sticks will set the appropriate torque no matter how powerful the impact is... this just isn't true, which is why I believe these sticks are a dangerous thing. Just use a torque wrench.
