'48 - '52 Steering column seal install

Am I correct in understanding that there is no other way to install the topmost column seal for the sterering column tube and shifter tube, but to pull the column completely off? It appears it has to go onto the tubes before they are in the truck. (This is part no. 7C-3515, the piece that goes over the rubber mat and seal plates)

Real tempting to split it so it can just slide over...

Yes, your assumption is correct. I'd loosen the box at the frame and then remove the drop bracket off the dash. You then pull the steering wheel and slide the drop bracket and the rubber seal up and off. If yours is a 51-52, then the shifter parts complicate it greatly. I don't reccommend this, but maybe you could slice it like you said and then use a super glue of some sort to fuse it back together.

Barry, seems like we had a thread on this issue a while ago with some of the darksiders installing the trim rings after the column was in. I agree that splitting the unit is not the first choice, but the little bit of memory I have left says that's what the fellas were doing and it worked OK. Any one of your darksiders want to chime in on this?

There could have been a thread as everything gets re-hashed periodically. My brain is slowly turning to mush. I'm lucky I remember to get up each morning!

Thanks for the responses! I have a column-shift '52, and it would be a simple job to replace it in one piece if the column shift bracket at the top of the column were removable. Then it could slide down to the floor.

I'm afraid for the time being I'm going to split it, they're only $3 so if someday I have nothing better to do with my time, I'll pull the whole thing and do it right. Right now I have about a million more pressing "issues" to deal with.

Thanks Again!

I would have no problem splitting it, then re-glue with urethane. It's used to glue in windshields, really tough stuff, sets up quick and black....

Thanks Gary; I'm not sure I have seen that in the typical auto store, but I'll ask around.
