460 Oil Pans
460 Oil Pans
One of the nastiest problems we have is oil drain plug locations which slobber oil all over the front crossmember.
Well, I found a solution for the 460.
The '79 and earlier oil pan is a large front sump, with the oil drain plug is right over the rear of the cross member. Yuck.
However, Ford makes a neat racing kit, with a rear sump oil pan. The kit includes the rear sump pickup and all necessary hardware.
BUT, this gets better!
The '80 - '86 oilpan looks almost identical to the racing one! The '86 460 I just put in my '66 has the rear sump oil pan, as does the '83 460 I bought for the transmission. The cool thing is, the drain plug is in the rear, and is in the clear.
(Hey, that rhymes! I must be a poet and don't know it; my feet aren't Longfellows.)
So, look for an oil pan from '80 - '86. Be sure to get the pickup tube, and the meain cap bolt that holds it in place.
I'll cross post this to the '67 and the '73 forums as well.

4x4's and vans used the rear sump oilpans also. Like you stated, get the pickup tube and double-ended bolt from the main cap.
Also Moroso, Hamburger, and other aftermarket companies make a rear-sump oilpan for the 429/460.
