I'm having power window problems. The driver's side only hums and the passenger's side will not raise at all. How much trouble would it be to convert to manual windows? Any ideas?
Thanks,
It would be easier to fix the gear boxes on your units. Pull the motors and disassemble the gear boxes. You will find three small plastic rolls that have failed. Replace them with same diameter pieces of pipe, reassemble and your problems are solved. If you do not want to "fix them yourself" buy rebuilt Power window motors and gear boxes for them. I have heard you can buy rebuilt ones but I never had to. About an hour per side. Luck,
ray
I recently went through this myself and can say that it is not a bad job at all. On my particular truck, I had frozen motors. I simply disassembled the driver's side, cleaned it, and replaced it and all is fine. On the passenger side, I bought a rebuilt motor at Autozone for $59 and it works well.
Be careful about the sheet metal. I got some nasty cuts on my hands from reaching inside the doors.
Yup... if your motors are turning, and the drive gears are gone, it's just a matter of finding a parts store that carries HELP! products. These are the odd-ball parts that should be stocked by your parts store, but end up being a dealer item. For my 86 F150, the motor was fine, the plastic drive unit was trash. HELP! has a repair kit with just those parts that I needed. Check it out... maybe just a few hours behind the door panel and you're on you way again.
