1985 F-150 2wd auto, I need to know what kind of transmission this has. It has overdrive, non-removable bell housing and a chunk of wires going into it. Please tell me what this could be and if it's computer controlled.
AOD stands for auto over drive. The wires are for converter lock up,4th gear{od} output signal, and possibly neutral safety/reverse light function. The converter lock up is controlled by a computer only if there is one to operate the engine functions. If you notice your gear selector has p-r-n-od-d-1 with no reference to second gear! That's because the valve body is designed to upshift from 1st to 3rd{drive},bypassing second gear! This can be changed by a valve body modification but don't know what it'll cost.Fortunenantly, while downshifting ,you can "catch" second gear and use it for a few rpm's before it has to get out of second with the valve body mods.

This is the AOD transmission. In 1986 the lockup was not computer controlled. The wires are for the backup lights and neutral start switch.

This is not correct. The transmission will upshift 1-2-3-4. There is no position to manually select 2nd gear, but it is there in the automatic mode.

the engine is totally electronically controlled, the only way to ovveride the computer is to remove the efi components and replace the intake manifold and put a carb on...

Guess what, thats exactly what I'm doing. What would I have to do to run this on a NON-COMPUTER, carbed engine? Thanks!!!
