I have a 90 F250 HD 4x4 with a 351, 4spd overdrive tranny 4.10 gears w/tow package and has 132k on the clock. I tow a 4700 pound boat trailer combo with it and it really seems to struggle and work hard . Of course I don't tow in overdrive but I would have thought this truck would easily tow that boat like nothing was there. Am I exspecting too much from it? In 4th gear on flat hi way I run 55-60 mph at 2500 rpm, can I push it a little more without fear of breaking it say on a 3 hr drive? Any help?

I just posted the message next to yours and I have the same problem only worse with my 89 F-250. I thought going to the 351 and auto tranny would solve my problem. Sounds like our only choice may be 9 miles per gallon and the 460? Maybe a few bolt on goodies would liven our motors up for less dollars. I imagine someone has a good answer to all this. Good Luck

132 K is a lot of miles...I'm sure your engine is getting tired unless someone has rebuilt it along the way. I have a 89 F250 2WD with a 460 and C-6 and 3:55 gears. I tow 9,000 lbs. I too thought it was gutless...Ford chokes the engines down with restrictive exhaust, etc. I just got through adding headers, dual exhaust, K & N filter, and replaced plugs, cap,and rotor. It made a world of difference. I can pass people now, my speed went up 5-7 MPH on the hills and increased my gas mileage about 2.5-3 MPG. Your 351 is a good engine, with a rebuild and freeing up its breathing you should be able to tow 5,000 lb. with ease.
