1997 Ford Explorer dies upon letting off gas at stops Someone please help!!!
hi All,
I really have the mechanic stumped on this one. He thinks my car is possessed
= )
Anyway here is the deal:
Symptoms:
Car is warm or cold: Start to drive come to a stop or roll to stop with foot off the gase: RPM drops to 0 then dies.
Sometimes the cars RPM will go to 0 then rev back up to 1000 but it is funny because it acts like it is going to die but then doesn't.
Here is what has been replaced:
Fuel filters, Idler moter, oxygen sensor there was something else that was replaced but I can't remember at this time:due to it threw a code for that so it was replace. We can't seem get it to throw a code.
Note: it is not a fuel pump due to this only happens every once in awhile and is not happening consistantly. However, it is happening enough to be concerned.
The mechanic is thinking it might be the intercial switch (spelling) that has to due with cutting gas to the tank.
Anyway...... any help or suggestions would be excellent because we are at our WITTS end.
Cheers
Michelle

Yes that is what i meant Yes the fuel pump relay was also changed too. Sorry forgot to mention that.
I am stuck now... not sure where to go from here.

If it happens when you come to a stop & restarts easy, I would have the transmission checked. The torque converter will come out of lock up when you shift to neutral or park to restart the engine. When you come to a stop and it is in lock up, it will kill the engine because it is in your highest gear.

If it's the torque converter, you can test it by putting the transmission in Neutral each time you come to a stop. If the engine Idle start's behaving OK, it's probably the transmission. Haven't seen this on the Explorers, but on some of the Fox Body Mustangs, a problem with the "salt & pepper" 10 pin connection in the wiring harness that connects the engine to the computer can cause severe idle surging. Also, be sure to check for any vacuum leaks. This is not as likely since it starts right back up, but it could be possible, especially if there could be some marginally sized leak.

Explorer attempts to stall at stops
Did you ever get this issue resolved?? I have a 2002 V8 Explorer which will occasionally dip the RPM's (and sometimes stall) when I come to a stop. It seems to be after it has run for a while (10-15 minutes) and when the speed is 30mph plus. I can not get it to stall if a I place it in neutral when I come to a stop. I thought it might be the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid; as I noticed that water from the AC drips directly on the connector for the solenoid. The problem started ocurring after the torque converter was replaced. Ford thought it was the IAC but that was wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.
