I'm just wondering if anyone has ever topped out there truck and what kind of speed was attained. Back when I had my '70 Ranger XLT Short Bed, it had a 302 built for more top end power, I built the engine when I was 15, so I wasn't thinkin, coupled to a stock C6 and a 3.53 rear end ratio, off the line it wasn't good because it had the stock stall in it but once it hit 3k it took off! Anyway one of my buddies was messin with me one night in his 92 Buick, so I decided to smoke him. We were on a strip of 4-line in the middle of nowhere and it was straight, I hit 6300 rpm in 3rd, I think it was about 125 mph. I'd never do that again these trucks tend to get light in the rear end.
72 F250 4x2 w/ 390 & C6 (I think it has a RV cam in it) I got it up to 90 (I think?? maybe a bit more) on the highway. It started to get the boat float/bounce and I backed off. Thought the body might fall appart at that speed also....
With the rear gear and tires I have I turn 4,000 rpm at 75mph so I don't think I could get much past 120mph. I had a 66 442 that would do 8.0's at 79 mph in the 1/8 years ago and I think my pick up is quicker 0-30, but not as fast after. Might take it to the strip and find out soon. I'm guessing mid 8's.
360/C4/3.73s . I had mine bouncing the stock gauge needle pretty bad, going down hill w/ the wind behind me. So Im guessing around 100 something. Was pretty loud, my RPMs were at like 4300-4500 or something like that. All I really remember was the sound of my engine running thru headers to glassbacks. SO loud I couldnt even hear the radio..
I ran my gear, rpm, and tire size through a calculator on richmondgear.com and it said i was doing 135, the speedo was so far over that I could not see it any more.
Hey MacOffutt....I dont even know why I put a radio in my truck...I can even idle and listen to the radio...always put exhaust on your truck! I have a 71 2wd short bed, built 302, spd, 4.10's, max i can do is 100 at 5000 rpms. This summer I'm going to a lower gear, maybe a 3.50.
71F100, I had the exact same set up as you. The best I ever did was 110, was tryin to pass a VW beetle, she didn't even know I was there, she was late for curfew and had to get home. Never realised how fast them dang cars can go.
Now I have 3.54's and I am scared to go past 80, go figure. but sure seems that 3.54s are better for stunting, 4.10's wind up to quick and you have to shift this way you have some time.
Oh wait, my truck is old that couldn't have been me smoking my tires officer, it must have been someone with a mustang or something.
My current truck, 70. My 72, 90+. My 84 F250 4x4 saw upwards of 110, towing a trailer going through Ontario- and I was still being passed. Something about a 300-6 barking through a dual exhaust at full load and about 4800rpm for an hour straight, it's a sweet sound.
Man I Love a good peeing contest. This is gonna be great. We already have 125 mph in 3rd behind a 302 to 4800 rpms for an hour straight. Ya gotta love it.
this is interesting . let me see if i can get a reaction with this! the engine and tranny i have in my truck would run 80 @ 2000 rpm with 355 gears before i took it out of the donor car . red line for the engine is 6500 rpm. now the jag rear i have in it has 288 gears so i should be able to theoretically get at least 180 top end but the body of the truck wouldn't let it get that fast. id like to do a dyno run to see what its capable of sitting still. bye the way the truck has not been on the road yet.
I just sold a 92 F150 that was running 70 @ 2000 behind a AOD with 3.55 rears. I have a little problem with 80, the math just aint there.
My current direct drive truck runs about 54 mph at 2000 rpms 3.00 rear and P235/75R/15 tires.
Running our series trucks over 100 to say 110-115 is possiable, but it's gonna take a big horse to overcome the wind resistance much past that.
There was a guy about a year ago claiming he got a speeding ticket for 160 mph in his truck. That happened several years ago and he didn't have the ticket to show.
I installed a new carb on my truck and was testing it on the 4 lane, ran it to 105 and let off. I was surprized how a smaller carb was pulling better at that speed than the 600 cfm I took off.
the engine was in a lincoln mkviii with 17's on it and that was the rpm for 80. i cruised that car three times to ohio and usually set the cruise at 80. i got 31 mpg in that car every trip too.
