This is on a 97 Expedition 5.4 4x4 w/ about 65,000 miles.
If the truck hasn't been started in awhile (like over night) on start up, it makes a weird rattling sound or a squeaking sound. It's immediatly aftert the truck is done cranking and the RPMS go up. It lasts for about 3-4 seconds and it just doesnt sound good. The way I describe the sound is something like if you have a box fan and the cover is off and you were to drop a tool into the fan and it would clack around for a minute. lol. If you are to start the truck after its warm, actually, if you start it like even 3 hours after its been started, it will not rattle. Just on the first start after its been sitting. What could this be??
One more idea. Turn the A/C off before shutting the truck off, even if it is on heat etc... the compressor always runs on these things to dry the air. Try this and see if it stops then we can explain that later. As far as the oil filter they have a anti-drain back valve in them, get a filter with a good silicon valve, the cheap ones use plastic. My filter is remotely located and I went through several Fxxx filters before reading of the drop in quality. I suggest the motorcraft.
I believe I used 10W-30. I know the filter is the fram filter from wal mart. What would be a good oil to use? they have motor craft semi synthetic 5w-30, would that work good in the 5.4? I will also use the motor craft filter. We always try to use the motor craft oil + filter in our Taurus SHO...so I guess well have to try it and see if it works in the Expedition.
My 2001 5.4 manual calls out semi synthetic 5-20. I also get The motorcraft oil from walmart with the motorcraft filter, best prices around. My walmarts around here do not seem to be carrying the motorcraft brand anymore.
Same here I asked one of the walmart employees and they said they dropped motorcraft. As for Fram there are alot of articles out there with pictures etc that show they are not what they used to be. Someone had an article on here awhile ago that was an oil filter study where some guy cut apart and inspected like 20 brands of filters and linked who made what and the quality etc... Anyone still have that?
