my 1990 for ranger has the 2.3 with the 8 plugs, it just had a tune up, and has been running great. The other day I got off of the freeway and as I applied the brake to stop at the light my engine kinda bogged down and stalled out. Now I can start it in park and neutral and it will idle just fine and you can rev the engine to a higher rpm, and a side note the brakes are fine to. Every time that I shift into gear it stalls, even if I hold the brake, it just kinda jumps and cuts out, it sounds more like shutting down than stalling. it is automatic and it stalls in reverse to. I tested with a comp. and returned nothing. any input would be great, thank you for your time

First off, clean out the idle air control (IAC) and check the base idle speed. If the idle speed doesn't change when you disconnect the IAC, then the valve is most likely plugged or inoperative and therefore can't compensate for the load when you put it into gear.
If it runs ok in park I wonder if it could be the transmmission saftey switch malfunctioning? When it gets put into gear it shuts off the engine. Just a thought I don't know much about transmisssions. Someone more knowlageable will come along.

Did you run the key on engine running test, if you didn't I would do that next. I have the procedure in the tech info thread at the top of this forum, pulling eec-iv codes.
If these Ranger's behave anything like the EFI 5.0 Mustang’s I've dealt with, I'd point my finger at stuff like the ISC (IAC) valve, TPS and TFI module.
Has the vehicle had a good basic tune-up done recently?
This could be anything from a vacuum leak to a non-cooperative sensor.
Place your bets gentlemen.
Is the torque converter locked?
AL.
Man oh man, I've been holding my breath on this thought for a bit now in hopes of the more simple stuff being checked first during the diagnostic process. No feedback from the truck owner so far.
cj091184, when you put it in gear, does it feel like a standard shift would if you were to release the clutch with the brake on? If you're driving and comming to a stop, can you keep the engine running by pressing on the gas while using the brake to stop it fully?

It only inhibits starter operation. It doesn't have anything to do with the computer.
hello everyone, sorry I have not written back with an update for so long, I'm in the middle of moving and had no internet connection. Also thank you for your ideas and input. Much Appreceiated.
and the battle rages on, I cleaned the entire throttle body and tested the IAC and TPS (Intake Air Controll and Throttle Position Sensor) and replaced the IAC. Then I tested it for codes and it returned code 98 hard fault FMEM.
This is from ann "actron" book.

A system problem is present causing the Electronic Control Assembly (ECA) to operate in Failure Management and Effects Mode (FMEM).
or,
Right side Exhaust Gas Oxygen (EGO) sensor-signal voltage indicates "lean" during "rich" air/fuel conditions.
or,
Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) solenoid circuit failure.
The (EPC) controlls the shifting presure thats all I know about that at the moment "any comments?" I still cannot drive the truck "so unfortunatley I can not take it for a road test" as soon as it's put into gear it shuts down the engine. Tommorow I'm going to check the transmission pan for debree. so all in all I 'm leaning towards the TC or the EPC. and I'll update you soon thanks again.
