ATF in Manual Tranny? (F250)

ATF in Manual Tranny? (F250)
'86 F250 (HD) I-6 300 w/4Spd Manual (1st is a granny gear)
My Haynes manual says 80W gear oil. So I went out and bought some Valvoline 80W - 90W synth blend. When I got home and drained the tranny, what appeared to be red ATF poured out.
I've read that the Mazda tranny's require ATF but not this thing? This truck was a special order back in the day, purchased by an rancher for pulling his horse trailer.
I'm now hesitant to use either ATF or the gear oil. Any suggestions?
