So I was going to change out the fluid in my 2000 f250, 5 spd today. I look in the manual and it says to use synthetic ATF Mercon... Ok... so I go down to Napa and they don't have Synthetic ATF, weird. So I ran to Wallyworld... They don't either.
IS There such a thing as synthetic ATF? Where can I get it? Can I use regular ATF Mercon or is that a no-no? I'd like to use the synthetic, but I can't find it?
Can't answer you question about whether or not you HAVE to use synthetic, I think it's better stuff but I found the synthetic both at Wally World and at Canadian Tire. More expensive but I just gave my old '78 a drink of the "good stuff".

Ford dealers have the fluid you need in stock, and while its going to be more expensive than autozone, for the amount of times you'll be changing it I'd recommend going the Ford route.
My local mechanic, whom is trustworthy and hasn't steered me wrong, gave me this advice way back when.
My tranny has almost 340K on it. So either he's right, or I'm just darn lucky
That's a good point. Just like non-synthetic oil not being all equal, in all probability, the same can be said for synthetic. Wonder what the difference in price is? Anybody know?
