4R70W - is it an easy rebulid?

I've got no reverse and no O/D and funny shifts. A junkyard has another tranny for $1000 w/exchange. The local tranny shop wants $2100-$2300 to rebuild mine. I see there are rebuild kits and I'm sure I will need a couple of other pieces when it's all said and done. I've never crakced open an auto before. Can I get a Haynes manual and rebuild it myself? I've done alot of mechanical work and an engine or 2. Is it possible for a shadetree to do this? I have no problem dropping the tranny and replacing it with one from a junker. I'm just asking if it would be cheaper to rebuild my own without expertise?

Transmission rebuilds usually require replacement of additional parts more than just what the rebuild kits include. I tried this on a Buick 3 speed with overdrive and it didn't work. I have rebuilt more engines than I count but my intro into tranny work was a flop. Along with some special tools and gauges (micrometers, snap ring pliers, etc.,) required for tranny work, you will need a transmission repair manual more than what Haynes has to do this. My recommendation is to scout around for someone who knows how to do this and wants to pick up some extra money on the side. Otherwise you can take a shot at doing it yourself and if it doesn't work you are back at square one.

Try punching "4R70W rebuilding" in GOOGLE, on the first page look for Lincolnsonline article. Also, ebay had a manual/cd

I just pulled the pan off to see what I could see... I don't know what I'm looking at but I did see alot of grey-ish mush on the magnet in the pan. Plus it was filmed all over the filter and valve body. So I can just imagine what the clutches and bands look like. I'm at bd.olbeal AT verizon DOT net. I appreciate any documents you have on this. I'm thinking of going to the junkyard for a whole other tranny. $1000 and it's done. Then trade it in! I did pay $9.99 at transmissioncenter.net for thier advisor tech sheet. It didn't help me at all. If any one wants it, let me know.

I've been searching the forums to see if I could find anyone that could point me to a write up on how to swap a trans out. My 98 Expedition has 227,000 on it and I want to replace the 4R70W tranny with a rebuilt one.

Does anybody know where I can download a manual that shows step by step how to remove and reinstall or a good guide?

haynes or chiltons will get you close. it's pretty much bolt/unbolt. torque converter is the hardest, it has to be set all the way back. be careful to take your time unpluging everything, the plastic connecters break easily.

Thanks for the input. Other than maybe a tranmission jack are there any other special tools required?

14 mm 6 point wrench to remove the torque converter bolts. a long screwdriver to turn the motor over with through the starter hole to remove the torque converter bolts. Make sure to get a gasket for the trans adapter to the transfer case, it dosn't come with one. I also needed a torch to heat the studs on the exhaust manifolds to get the nuts off. The ford trans comes with a magnetic filter you have to cut into the steel lines, so you will need a tubing cutter. You also need a can of transmission line cleaner, to clean all the old oil out of the cooler. Now is a good time to replace the cooler with a larger one if you pull trailers, or push snow. I got one with an electric fan from summet for about $100. I also got a temp guage for the trans to see when I needed to turn the fan on and off. Heat is the killer in this trans, so that's money well spent. other than that, a set of ramps to set the front wheels on, and a large jack to raise the back of the truck when you ready to bring the trans out the side.

Thanks Dustybumpers. You're a wealth of knowledge on this.

You wouldn't happen to know where I could get my hands on some good instructions for doing this would you? You mentioned cutting some tubing, so I would assume, I'm going to have to have some rubber tubing or something to put that tube back together. I have a Hayne's book on my Expedition but sometimes when you get real specific with something like this, they tend not to be detailed enough. Do you think a Hayne's tech book on Ford Trannies help would help any more?

well, let's see. read the book a whole bunch of times, so everything makes sence. I can give you kind of a guide line, but nothing beats hands on. If you lived closer, that would have helped.
1.put the front of the truck on portable ramps. make sure you have a jack large enough to still raise the truck from the back. this step you will need later. Make sure to chock the rear wheels.
2.remove both driveshafts. now is a good time to replace the u joints if you want, you can see a how too on that in my sig.
3. Remove the transfer case. don't forget to un hook any linkage or wires. thee are 6 bolts, on the back half of the trans addapter. Use the trans jack and some scrap 2x4's to do this, it's heavy, and does not sit flat on ANYTHING. some oil is going to come out of the trans when the transfer case comes off you will have to use a pry bar to get it started
4.Undo the studs on your exhaust at the manifolds. You may have to use a torch to heat the nuts.
5. Place trans jack under trans, and snug it up.
6.undoo the bolts in your crossmembertop frame, middle, and bottom frame. they should be 15 mm and 18 mm.
7. undo the bolts on the bottom of the trans mount, then the side/top bolts. raise the trans until its against the floor.
8. remove the trans mount
9.usea bf hammer, and whack the crossmember out of the way
10. undo all electrical connections. Use care, they're old and brittle, and break very easy. some there are no replacements for any longer.
11. remove the starter
12. remove the plate in the front of the trans, under the motor where the exhaust used to sit.
13. remove the rubber plug in the bottom of the trans bell houseing
14. with a large screwdriver, through the starter hole, start turning the flywheel untill you see a bolt in the flywheel towards the motor, down near the bottom. take the 14mm 6 point wrench that I mentioned earlier, and holding the flywheel with the screwdriver, remove it. turn the fly wheel again and repeat for all 4 bolts. while busy doing this, watch through the hole where the rubber plug came from, until you see the drain plug. paint a stripe with white paint on the flywheel on the side towards the motor so you know where to line up the new converter.
15. take the large screwdriver, and push the converter back towards the back of the truck
16.remove the gear shift cable off the trans.
17.look at the motor plate from the engine side and make sure all the bolts are out
18. remove the 5/8 bolts from the right side of the trans.
19. remove the dipstick, and set aside
20. remove the dipstic tube, twisting, and pulling upwards. a whole lot of oil will spill. a whole lot.
21. remove the 3 5/8 bolts on the other side of the trans
use a pry bar, and work the trans off the motor.
let trans down. make sure the dowel pins stayed on the motor, if not, use a pair of channel locks, and take them out of the trans, and drive them back in the motor with a small hammer. DO NOT LOOSE THESE DOWEL PINS>>>>> EVER!!!!!!! use the jack to raise the back of the truck enough to get the trans out one side.

reverse everything to put it back. I have some bolts I use that fit in the back of the motor, and I cut the heads off of, that are about 4" long. put them in the bottom 2 holes, it will help you line up the tran when you put it back in.

MAKE SURE TO HAVE THE PERSON SELLING YOU THE UNIT SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE SURE THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS ALL THE WAY BACK. if it is not, and you bolt it up, you will crush the pump, and render the trans useless, and void your warrenty all at one time.

make sure to get the trans adapter to transfer case gasket. it don't come with the trans

use mercron 5. ford loads the trans full of oil, but you know how that's going to go.

when putting the dipstick tube back in, there is a ball where it goes. clean the tube, and put some oil on the o ring. push HARD, with a twisting motion, and the ball will go inside the trans. some oil will come out. don't worry about the ball, it lives there till someone takes it out later.

I guess that's about it.

Oh, and you'll need good help

looks like post #14 covers just about everything
I would add check the flywheel teeth-chipped or broken teeth
and I believe the tubing cutter would be to install an aftermarket cooler
a must for most transmissions
most are around $50-$60 or so and so worth the money
