97 explorer getting a ton of front end noise. Sound like a rubber to rubber sound.. It when I steer and when I hit a bump. Very audible outside the truck.. scares small children and animals. Its very loud:-)
Yes! Sounds exactly like the problem with my '99 explorer. Started about a week ago. At first blamed it on the cold weather, but it continues all the time, steering and over bumps, etc. Seems to originate from pass. side front end, but can't pinpoint any better than that. Jacked up front, pulled pass. front wheel, nothing visual out of the ordinary. Removed shock, no effect. Sprayed rubber bushings w/silicone, no real change in noise. Very annoying sound, much like a rusty worn out bedspring! The noise is similar during steering, which has me concerned Any input appreciated!

If its the same noise I had two years ago on my 96 Explorer you might want to check the lower ball joint on the passenger side. I've read this is the most common ball joint to go bad. My was split wide open and the noise started this time of year (Winter). Ford sells the part for $23 bucks and Auto Zone will rent you the press for free. It took me about 4-5 hrs. to do the job. Good Luck, Danny
I also had a similar noise in two Explorers, a 97 & 98. In both cases it was the inner tie rod. I removed the clamp from the boot and injected a silicone lubricant into the boot and replaced the clamp. The noise went away.
