'99 4x4 Engagement Noise

I have a 1999 Ranger SuperCab Sport, Automatic, 4.0L , 4X4. Recently when I turn the **** to engage the 4 wheel Drive High while at a standstill I hear a clicking noise then a clunk or thud. The 4WD seems to work fine and engage after that but I am wondering what those noises are and am I looking at a bigger problem than just some annoying noises in the future like loss of 4WD and loss of alot of $$$. Anyone know what these are the symptoms of?

Thanks!

I recommend you read through this thread, it discusses in detail the PVH 4x4 engagement system in your Ranger:

The same thing has happened to me before.....and not too long afterward my hubs just quit engaging. It'll probably just get worse as time goes along. I'd reccomend that if you still have an extended warranty, take it in and have them fix it, or you can just lock your hubs in full time. Do a search for like PVH quick fix on this site and you should be able to see how to do it. It was very easy...took me 15 minutes and it works great. No more hub problems.
