Smile Extended Warranties

After waiting for many years I have finally purchased a truck and thanks to this forum I learned a whole lot about fords trucks. A week ago I purchased a 2000 F 250, XLT Supercab, 4x4, 7.3 power stroke, Automatic truck on eBay. It has 118,400.00 miles on the od. The company also offers an extended warranty from CARS Protection Pluss inc

CARS Protection Plus offer 12, 24, 36, 48 month terms ranging from $795 to $1895. My question is, has anyone of you here ever purchased this coverage and was there any problems.

I live in Hawaii and the trucks comming from Texas... So I kinda/sorta think it might be good to get since I did not view the vehicle in person and did not test drive it. The company I got the truck from did have high positive reviews. They stated that everything was in good working order. They seem to be honest. There was'nt much information about Cars Protection plus on the web. Hope to hear from someone soon Aloha,

Take the $1895 and put it in the bank and drawl interest. You'll have a better chance of repairing your truck with out dealing with an extended warranty company. This is from experience.

It is simple math. For a 12 month, $795 warranty you would have to incur a repair bill of at least $795 for it to be worth it. Is it worth paying $795 to replace cracked rotors or something like that or would you rather pay $300 (or whatever it costs, surely less than 795!) for a "major" repair like that?
I tried to explain this rationale to the closing lady at the dealership from which I recently bought my truck. She looked at me like I was insane. Extended warranties (at additional cost) are a huge money making scheme that is becoming pervasive throughout the entire retail industry. I bought my son a computer game for Christmas and they tried to sell me an extended warranty for it! For crying out loud!
If you are worried about your purchase of a used vehicle, spend $50 - $100 to have a qualified mechanic go over it thoroughly. That would be money well spent.

I agree with the above posts , extended warrantees are a waste of money 9 out of 10 times ( and I know some will disagree ) . Bank the money and most likely you will never need to touch it , but you will have some cash to start modifying the truck !
Enjoy your truck !

Joe,

For the out of state F-350 I bought I did get a 30 day CARS warranty because of the distance the truck was shipped. I paid about $250 or so for peace of mind figuring if there was a problem hidden or otherwise it would show up in the first month.

To make a long story short there were a few small problems - door open sensor, defective drivers side mirror switch and such. Little things. Thankfully I knew not to be suckered in for the big dollar warranties offered.

The CARS warranty has so many exclusions, conditions and so on that they can weasel out of many repairs. There was(is) also a deductible.

The company did pay for some of the repairs but interestingly enough their out of pocket coverage was less than my out of pocket cost for the warranty.
Insurance companies know the odds. They are not going to sell anything they can not profit from.

I agree with others. Keep your money and keep up the truck. That way YOU come out ahead.

Que nada

I think I did pay more than $250. Maybe a couple of hundred or so. I got it through the dealership.

The best insurance is good homework and proper maintenance. Know the history of the vehicle and take care of it. Then you know what to expect and hopefully the only surprises will be under the Christmas tree.

Best of luck to you.

Extended warranties are a joke. I bought an extended warranty on a mustang many years ago and had some problems and the company pretty much said you have to sue us in order for them to pay. Well Im in FL and they were based out of New Jersey (the actual main company even though the dealership sold it to me here in FL) so in order for me to sue them I had to fly to NJ and get a court summons on them. That alone would have cost allot. Then fly back and forth until the actual court date. So you can see it wasnt worth it for me to pursue going after them. Plus some extended warranties have a clause stating it will go to subrigation if there is a problem. Then your really SOL. I did go after the dealership local to me and they refunded my whole amount I paid for the extended warranty plus fixed my car.

I purchased a sofa and loveseat 2 years ago and bought an extended warranty but I knew to ask where the company was based out of. They are out of FL. so I purchased the extended warranty. Same crap happened again. The sofa split in a seam and the company tried to get out of paying for the repairs even though it was clearly stated in there contract they would pay for the repairs of that nature. Since they were out of FL I contacted there representing attorney and within 2 days they were calling me to fix the couch. Turns out they couldnt fix the couch and I have a brand new one comming in about 2 weeks.

I have only had one good extended warranty ever and that was on a Refrigerator I bought from Best Buy. Refrigerator totally went out and they paid for my food that I lost up to 200.00 and fixed the refridge. Not bad for only an 89.00 5 year extended warranty.

So I would bypass the extended warranty on any automobile unless there based out of your state and dont have a subrigation clause if you have to go after them.

Why don't you see if someone can take a look at the truck for you. There are a lot of people on this site that would probably be willing to help. What part of Texas is it in? I'm in the San Antonio area. At least that way youd have a little more info.
