I have a 86 F-150 which came from the factory with a 9 inch rear end, and it also has a towing package.......I think the axles are 31 spline but i dont know for sure......can someone help me clarify that????
Only way to make sure is to pull an axle and count the splines. You can't be 100% sure just by looking at the rear axle or looking up codes. I have the same thing still to find out about the 9 inch in my 82 F100. I plan on rebuilding it in the spring. Last thing you want is for someone to tell you that you have something and it turns up to be wrong. It only takes a little bit to pull an axle to be sure. Fred
well ive been trying my hardest to find my way around pulling the axle ......but i guess its something i just got to do....The reason i want to know is because im planning on buying a posi center section with lower gears
It is very simple as long as the rear pumpkin hasnt been changed. There is a metal tag under one of the bolts. List the code here and I'll ID it for you.
Hey 286merc could you decode mine for me as well? I have my factory 1982 light truck shop manual and only information I could decode my self was this:
WDM-CJ 1K01
2 75 9 S314C
1. WDM-CJ Axle Model (any further decoding?)
2. 1K01 (date, year, month, day) but what exact date?
3. 2.75 gear ratio (non traction-lok, no L present) conventional 4 pinion
4. 9 ring gear diameter (inches)
5. S314C Plant Code
Heres more information off my door sticker.
1. Type GVW F101 (GVWR 4650, 133 inch wheelbase)
2. Axle 134 (Ford, #Capacity 3750, ratio 2.75)
Reading in the manual I found this:
There are two types of wheel axle bearings. A sealed grease packed ball bearing used in conjunction with an inboard oil seal pressed into the axle housing is employed on F-100 2800lbs. A tapered roller bearing with integral outer seal is used on F-100/150 3750 and E-100/150 all and Bronco axles.
Hopefully I didn't supply too much information, lol. All this information is straight out of my Factory shop manual. Im guessing that I have 31 spline axles since it has the 3750lbs Capacity. Thanks for reading all this. Fred
A F-150 had 31 spline axles, F-100 had 28 spline. The 3750 rear end had taper roller brgs. Also in most states and in Canada the 6500 lb GVW made it exempt from most emission controls in the late 70's.
Hey 286merc, I noticed in another post you said something about Hollanders, that you used to decode a 9 inch rear end code. Could you give me anymore info on mine? Here it is again. Thanks Fred
