Anybody ever had the Pioneer TS-A6880R speakers before? I'm looking at them as a replacement for the factory speakers in my 1996 Ford Explorer. Anybody had any problems with them, or have any other comments about them?

I will be blunt about this. Compared to what is available for very little more money, 4-way speakers of this design are among the poorest speakers available. The high frequency reproduction at anything above medium volume is ear piercing, at best, especially if using a HU as amplification. The "4-way" designation is a gimmick because there is no good reason to have this many drivers. In day to day listening in a vehicle environment, a really nice 2-way system and subwoofer will be all a person could ever need. For a 4-way design to be worthwhile, it would take big bucks with high quality installation and tweeking. Some may disagree, but a really good 2-way with proper quality crossover network will be able to reproduce any part of the "above subwoofer" frequencies. Like I said, the 4-way BS is a gimmick. To sell this speaker @MSRP of $99 means that the quality of parts and construction are very "low end". The crossover components are junk, as are the individual drivers themselves. Think about it. One pair of these speakers consists of 8 individual drivers and crossover components for those, so how good can the quality be? A 2-way design in the $99 price range would be a better choice than a 4-way at that same price.
One of the reasons I was looking at those specific ones was because I can get them for about $56/pair at cardomain.com. Do you know of any other specific speakers in the $50-100/pair price range that you would recommend? I'm looking for something that will fit exactly - that I can just "drop in", so to speak.

If you want to buy from cardomain.com, I would recommend the Infinity Reference 6802cf in the price range you mentioned. They are $79.95 with free shipping. They are superior to the 4-way Pioneer coming and going. In fact, they would be great with a head unit, and if you ever upgrade to amps, etc., you could still use them. 5x7/6x8s are all over ebay in the price range you are looking for. MBQuart, Boston Acoustics, Kicker, Alpine, Infinity, Rockford Fosgate, Phoenix Gold would all be better than the 4-ways. And these brands are of good enough quality that if you use them properly they would be worth the risk of buying without warranty, in my opinion. Quality equipment rarely fails except when abused by the user. It is common to find speakers that list for $200 for $50-75 on ebay. But, ebay has its pros and cons. Buy what you feel comfortable with. Heck, if you have heard the Pioneers you mentioned and liked them, don't let me talk you out of getting them. Get what makes you happy. That's what it's all about. But remember, some things are NOT a bargain at any price.

Thanks for pointing out the Infinity 6802cf speakers. I had not noticed them as they are listed in the section that says "adapter or installation kit required" and I was not looking at any of those. It does say they come with 6x8 adapters though so it sounds like it would still be a fairly easy install job. They have good reviews on cardomain too.
I noticed when you were listing speaker manufacturers you didn't mention Pioneer. Is Pioneer pretty much not a recommended brand all around? Or at least in the price range I'm looking for? They have a couple other 6x8 speakers in my price range - best to stay away from those as well?
I'm not at all opposed to buying on eBay. I had already been looking for the Pioneer's cheaper on eBay. Whatever I end up deciding on, I'll likely watch eBay for a few days first to see if I can get them cheaper there.
And finally, no, I haven't heard the Pioneer's I originally asked about. I haven't heard any of these speakers ever, in fact. All I have to go on at this point is prices, specs, and reviews listed on cardomain and other sites. Add to that now the helpful information from you guys!
Pioneer makes some nice equipment. The 4-ways mentioned don't happen to fall into that category, in my opinion. That isn't to say that there aren't people that can be happy with them. It's just that they are so limited in their capabilities. There is a market for them, obviously. But I really think people can do better. There are dozens upon dozens of very nice 5x7/6x8s on the market, so I can't see having to settle for those. Pioneer has some 2-ways that are comparable to the others mentioned. Having said all that, the bottom line is that you have to decide HOW important it is to you to pay the differences there are from one quality level to the next, and how many of those steps "up" you want to take. The quality range of speakers is vast. Go to a shop and listen if you can.
