Upsizing tires - do I need to do the spare as well?
I am considering putting 285/75/16's on my truck, but don't really want to upgrade the 265/75/16 spare, if I don't have to. How bad/dangerous would it be to run the 265 with the 285's if I had to?
not that bad unless you run it on the rear and have an LS(limited slip) rear end, it will burn out the clucth pack in no time. the rear end will still work, you just wont have an LS anymore
ps. if you do decide to get the 285 spare it will fit in the stock spare location, i have one in there right now
I guess if you have a LS, it would be a fifty-fifty chance you would need to swap two tires upon the occurence of a flat tire. If you get a flat in the front, no problems. If you get one in the back, just take one off the front and put the spare up there and then do the back.
I want to replace my spare with a new tire next time and do a 5 wheel rotation. I will get more mileage (20 or 25%, I can't decide) out of a set of tires (for a higher price), but I can rotate the tires myself (which I am more likely to do than pay $40 at Discount) and I keep an "eye" on my spare to know it is good. I just replaced my shocks last weekend and in the process realized my spare is flat. I don't want my spare on my truck for the ten years that I plan to keep my truck, so I intend to get 5 identical tires next go-around and put the spare into the mix.
i would be real careful about going with a different size spair than the rest. if you use it on the front and engage your 4wd, you could have problems. in mud, sand, snow, ice, etc if could be ok, but on a hard paved road you will have different turning ratios, and it will be just like the other guys mentioned with the rear end LS.
i would not think so.... a 315 is pretty close to a 35" tire, where as the stock size of 265 is a touch over 31.5". the 285 tire is just shy of 33", and i have seen what a difference it makes on these trucks to go from the 265 to 285. your best bet is just to spend the money and do all five to be on the safe side. if your spending several hunders on tires, and extra 60-90 wont hurt any worse....... let us know what you choose !!!
Mattd17, I already got 5 315's but have not tried to fit the 5th up under the truck. I was just curious if anyone had tried or modified something to make it happen.
Thanks for the reply.
