Tire size

My 03 Excursion 6.0 PSD came with 285/75/16 and they need to be replaced. The stock tire on the truck is a 265, as is my spare. My tire shop is recommending I go back to the stock size. I am torn, those 265 look a bit puny. Any comments or suggestions? Any advantage to going to the 265? I do mostly highway, long trips up and down the I95 corridor.
Cheers, Chris

You're right. 265's do look small and dinky. Personally, I dont see any advantage to the 265's except that your spare is that size. If the 285's float your boat, that's what I would go with.

Only problem with my 285's is they rub if the steering wheel is cranked all the way (doesn't happen often.) I think the speedometer is calibrated for 285's, it's right on the money.

The 285/75/16 is a 32.8" tire. What does yours rub on?

I think he's talking about the width but I've got 33x12.5x17's on mine and there's no rub from lock to lock but my wheels may be slightly more offset. Don't know since they came on the truck but I was planning to go back to 285x17's when it needs new tires.

When I replaced my stock tires I went to 285's and won't go back. Looks 100% better, like the tire seems to better fill the tire well. No other differences noted, other than cost!

It depends on the brand, they are all a little different.
My285 BFG A/T's are 33in.

No rubbing here, but I do have v-codes.

I have no problems with my 285s BFGoodrich rubbing but then I think my Excursion is a bit lifted.

I have the Grabber AT2. I think they are a litte wider then the Timberlines that I had on before. (And much better traction)

I've made the decision to stay with 285s. A few bucks more but I felt I would be kicking myself for the next 50k miles .....

Get the 285s, they mostly come in Load range E, so take what the shop says with a grain of salt and stick with what makes you happy.

Just imagine the look on their faces if you said you wanted to put 305s on

I wouldn't want to see my spouse's face if I pulled into the driveway with 305s on the truck.

It's either 25 or 30 posts but Photobucket, to me, is better and easier.

I have done a lot of research about all this and as far as I can tell you can stuff 315/75R16 on the stock rims with just a front leveling kit!
