I got 99 f250 crewcab 4x4 , monday we got 3 inchs of snow , when I flipped the switch on the dash to 4 high the light lit up but the front end didn't lock in . I backed up , tried low range, back and forth in and out of 4 wheel drive . then I heard a loud bang in the front end . then I asked the mailman watch the the wheels as I goosed the gas and they were turning . Now today they are not working again . What do you think is wrong and about how much it could cost?? fred
My 2004 F-250 has done the same thing twice (leaving me stuck both times). The first time the ABS light stayed on until I put back in two wheel drive. The second time the A/C controls switched to defrost mode regardless of their position. This problem reset after setting overnight. The dealer could not find any codes or duplicate the problem.

In my case the front drive shaft was turning and the transfer case light was on indicating that the transfer case did engage. The truck would go into four-wheel drive when the hubs where manually selected. From my research the problem is with a vacuum leak in the system that engages the hubs and it could be hard to find. Next time make sure the drive shaft is turning and then manually lock the hubs. If they “lock in” then a vacuum leak may be the problem.
Check vacuum first, then pull the hubs apart and clean/grease them really good with a new O-ring. Mine work better than they ever did after this treatment.
On a thread a few days back there were lot's more details.
I went to the ford dealer today and asked about the front end , He said the seals might be leaking and or the fact that something might be froze, or that I haven't engaged the 4 wheel drive sence early summer. He also said early 99's have trouble with this and ball joints after I said the truck wonders some . Anyway he said 300 to do the seals or 700 to do both the seals and ball joints. I said not right now with christmas and things as they are maybe later. Right I am really tired of 10 or less mpg and don't care to spend the money , maybe I should trade it off ??? THANKS FOR THE COME BACK FRED
