I purchased a use 2001 F-250 7.3 4x4 but I don't know how the 4x4 works.
Inside the cab, there are three switches for 2WD, 4x4 Low and 4x4 high.
Outside the truck, the front wheels has a "****" for 'lock' and 'auto'.
I have no idea what this means and how it works.
Can someone please let me know how the 4x4 works? How do I switch from 2WD to 4x4?
Leave it in two wheel for on highway driving and leave the hubs "auto" . When going off road turn the hubs to the "locked" position and select "4 high" , if you encounter some really rough going you can select "4 low" . If the weather gets really nasty you can run with the hubs locked . then when you need 4 wheel drive just turn the switch to 4 high ( I prefer to know the hubs are locked instead of relying on the auto setting )
Nothing to it . Have fun with your truck .
remember...you can switch to 4x4 high as long as you are under 55 mph ( forward or reverse), BUT if you are switching to 4x4 lo YOU MUST stop the vehicle , put it in neutral and put your foot on the brake and reverse this when leaving 4x4 lo. these instructions are in your owners manual. there are some safety features in the esof system to prevent some srew-ups. i leave my hubs in the "auto" postions and they have never failed to work for me...like the saying goes...you have to use it or you will loose it. whenever you are off road for any reason, put it 4x4 just to operate the system.
