just out of curiosity.... those of you who play in the mud the most and tend to get mud flying high, how do you keep all of it off your windshield? last weekend i was having a horrible time seeing due to 1-2" thick layer of mud on the windshield and the wipers did absolutely SQUAT. i had to hang my head out the door (since i was running without doors which is really badass in the mud!) and was in danger of getting a good taste of the mud (which did happen 1 really good time!).

i thought maybe someone came up with a high pressure water system to keep the windshield wet or use RainX so the mud won't stick or somethig creative like that. I wanna run water lines over the top of the cab pointing down the windshield and get a high pressure nozzle and pump so when it starts to clump up i can basically pressure wash my windshield while driving.

i will be putting my doors back on very soon due to some REAL nice heat coming off that 460 of mine and it is starting to get a hair chilly so i won't be able to hang my head out anymore!

any creative ideas?

I always throw my wipers on before I hit the puddle and keep my hand on the washer button so I can add water as needed. If you want to "pressure wash" your windows you'll have to have a pretty big resevoir and a higher pressure pump. I've been trying to find a res/pump off some other vehicle that will work a little better but so far no luck. I do use RainX and it helps but you still need the wipers to clear the stuff off. FWIW you'll want to have your water pressure coming from the bottom up. The airflow goes up over your cab as does all the crud when your wipers are going. There's no point in spraying that stuff downward just so it can be pushed back up. I wonder if you could set up 4 or 6 water jets to increase the volume.

Oh, and if you stick your head out the door or window make sure you've got goggles. That mistake cost me a pair of contacts and a lot of pain!

I'm attempting to put 14 ga. checkerplate in certain areas of the front and rear ends as to keep the majority of mud and stuff out of my direct viewing path. Running a bodyless tube buggy has its advantages and disadvantages...
On my other truck, I'm gonna hook up a couple 5 gallon bucket to an electric water pump to a piece of 1/2" PVC with little holes in it and have that spraying on the windshield along with the wipers to hopefully halp keep it at least a little clean.

Dang man, this gives me an idea for when I ditch my side gas tank I could put a nice big water tank in there instead. Hahaha! Open my gas door and dump water in there . . . it would be fun to do that in front of a group of tree huggers while the biyatch about my truck. Then I'd get in, fire it up and hit the flame throwers.

/Rant off. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Ditch your stock rubber wipers and get some high quality silicone dual blade ones. They cost, but make one helluva difference when the stuff starts to cake.

I run rainx on mine but it really doesn't do much until the mud dries alittle then it just slides off, and to wash it, I got ahold of some of those old water type fire extingushers, they are refillable, and really blast the mud off (they will shoot a stream of water 60+ft.) I don't even have wipers on my race truck they just add weight and no benifit. BTW watch goverment auctions they had done away with all the old water types and I got 4 brand new ones really cheap

I just bring a jug of water and rags to clean it off, never found a good method to keep it clean while your in the thick of it. A little elevation doesn't hurt though I like monsters use of the old fire extinguishers.

I like the extinguiser idea, I have two and each holds 3 gallons at up to 120 PSI. Put it on the seat and run a tube to the windshield, squeeze the handle and call it good.

-OR- to one up that one If you have OBA you could weld a pressure tank as big as you want, plumb air into it to keep it pressurized, and use an electronic flow solenoid. that way all you have to do is hit the button rather than squeeze the handle.

Same basic idea, just one on a HUGE scale

get an old 80 gallon shop air compressor and toss it in the bed. A little extra traction never hurts in a pickup

Except if you're doing mud drags. Then that extra tank will weight you down a bit. It would be cool though, 30 foot plume of water going everywhere.

My cousin uses a large water can in the bed with an EFI fuel pump and (I think) 1/2" PVC. He drilled small holes in the PVC that runs across the top of the windshield, and it'll blast anything off. He has a windshield visor that hides the PVC too so it doesn't look so goofy.

Just a though.

I also used a high pressure fuel pump from a ford to spray water once, but it was on my radiator. I had 4 nozzles from those pump up garden type sprayers pointed at the front of my radiator on a 67 Bronco mud racer. I had nozzles set on a fan pattern and it worked great-temp start to rise while waiting in staging lines, I'd hit switch for a few seconds and it would drop back down. Anyway, the only problem I had was the pumps didnt seem to like water-After the racing was done and the vehicle sat for a while(days or weeks) the pump would lock up (corrosion??) Eventually I started to drain the tank and lines after the race and spray WD-40 into the feed line while pump was on untill water was all pushed out. Just something to think about!! That compressed water/air tank idea is great- makes me think I might just have to find a way to fit a compressor on the new trail rig!!
