This is my first posting on the site. I have a 41 1/2 ton that I'm putting on a 85 s-10 chassis. I have two measurement type questions.
I need to know the distance (horizontal) from the centerline of the front wheels to the firewall of the cab?
Also the distance (vertical) from the top of the bulkhead of the bed to the bottom of the rear window?
I need these measurements to properly fit the body on my frame. I have the cab and bed sitting on the frame but want to make sure they are in the correct position before I final weld the mounts.
I am a new member and am just reading through some old posts, I have a 46 going on a 84 S10 frame. The frame is painted and I will be setting the cab in a few months after the body work on it is done. I was wondering how yours is coming along and how you worked out the difference in track width. It seems the S10 may be narrower than the Ford.
Thanks for any help you can be.
Welcome to FTE!!!!! I'll try to get the measurements today and post them. You might want to check wescotts auto in Boring Or. they have a web site with a lot of measurements. I think most things are based on where the front axle is located, then all else will follow. You may have to cross members and such and the cab mounts will be different. I am putting a '40 on a '99 Ranger frame the wheel base is the same the biggest thing I have found is that the Ranger frame is 12" narrower than the '40 so I'm making outriggers from the frame to meet the holes in the cab.
Good Luck and keep posting here I want to see how you progress.
John
I am coming along with my 41. I am to the point where I have to gather up the rest of my front end to finish aligning the cab on the frame. The only trouble I ran into when mounting the 40's cab on the s-10 frame was that the 40's cab at it's narrowest point at the front of the rocker interfered with the s-10 frame. The s-10 frame has a slight kick outward right behind the front wheels. I cut that kick out section off and boxed the frame rails. Doing that gave me the clearance to mount the cab over the frame rails. As far as the track width question: I used a ford nine inch rear end which is about 2" narrower than stock, the front I believe is a few inches narrower also. When I order my wheels I will compensate for the narrower track in the back spacing of the wheels. I also used a short bed s-10 frame which is about 3 inches shorter than a stock 40's ford. I am closing up the gap between the cab and the bed and also taking some length out from the front of the bed.
Thanks for the replys and any help you could be to me.Thanks again, Joel
Thanks for the help guys, I was glad to get quick replys, I too am cutting my box length by 3 1/2 inches, making up the difference with the wheel will help. I may even narrow my box by a few inches to help with the width.
Thanks Again,
Gene
In response to the why am I going with the s-10 frame, the original frame consisted of about 2 foot of front frame rail and that was about it. This truck had sat in a field for 20 years. The bed was totally gone and the frame and bottom 6" of the cab was very badly rusted. The s-10 frame also gives me the ride and handling of a newer truck and the ease of lowering suspension/handling options.
As far as fenders, I have only found new fiberglass pieces, the only source for steel would be original fenders from another truck. I am going to have to go with fiberglass pieces, my originals are missing the bottom 6" or so. There are many fiberglass manufacturers on the internet.
